Best Glock 17 Mag Extension

What is a Glock 17 magazine?πŸ’‘

It is a device that increases the ammunition capacity of a standard Glock 17 magazine. The extension replaces the magazine’s base plate, providing additional space for extra rounds. This accessory is popular among competitive shooters and law enforcement officers, as it allows for extended shooting sessions between reloads, increasing efficiency and performance in high-pressure scenarios.

Best Glock 17 Mag Extension

FeaturesπŸ”

⚫ Increased Capacity: The most prominent feature is its additional bullet capacity. It increases the standard magazine’s capacity, allowing for more rounds before the need to reload. The exact increase can vary depending on the specific model of the extension.

⚫ Ergonomic Design: The extension has a thoughtful, ergonomic design that integrates seamlessly with the Glock 17. It provides a larger grip surface, improving handling and allowing for better control and stability during rapid firing.

⚫ Durable Construction: Typically made of robust materials such as high-grade polymer or steel, these extensions are built to withstand the rigours of intensive shooting sessions. This durability ensures longevity and reliable performance, even in harsh conditions.

⚫ Easy Installation: They are designed for simple, tool-free installation. Users can attach or remove the extension with ease, making it convenient to switch between standard and extended magazines.

⚫ Compatibility: While designed for this Glock model, many mag extensions are also compatible with other Glock models. This versatility allows users to standardize their accessories across multiple firearms.

AdvantagesπŸ”₯

  • ⭐ Increased capacity: A magazine extension adds more rounds to the magazine, giving you more firepower in a self-defence situation. A Glock 17 magazine with a +2 extension holds 19 rounds, while a +3 extension holds 20 rounds.

  • ⭐ Improved grip: It can make it easier to grip the magazine, especially when your hands are wet or cold. This can help you to maintain control of the gun during recoil and make it easier to reload.

  • ⭐ Reduced reload time: Besides these units can help to speed up reloads by making it easier to insert the magazine into the gun. This is because the extension provides a larger surface area for your fingers to grip.

  • ⭐ Less recoil: The added weight of a magazine extension can help to reduce recoil, making it easier to control the gun during firing. This can be especially beneficial for shooters with smaller hands or less experience.

  • ⭐ Fewer malfunctions: It can help to reduce the chances of malfunctions by providing more support for the magazine in the gun. This is because the extension helps to keep the magazine from moving around during firing.

TypesπŸ“Œ

πŸ”° Extended Floor Plate: These are the simplest forms of mag extension. As the name suggests, they replace the standard magazine floor plate with a slightly larger one, providing space for one or two additional rounds. They maintain a compact profile, hardly altering the Glock’s original size. πŸ”° Plus 2 Extension: This type increases the magazine’s capacity by two rounds. It’s a popular choice for those who want a balance between increased capacity and manageable size. Many of these also incorporate a grip extension, making the gun easier to handle.
πŸ”° Double Stack Extensions: These extensions significantly boost the magazine’s capacity. Some models can increase the Glock 17’s standard 17-round magazine to hold up to 30 rounds. Due to the size, they can affect the firearm’s balance and make it heavier. πŸ”° Drum Magazine Extensions: Although not technically an extension, drum magazines are an option for those seeking the highest possible capacity. These cylindrical magazines can hold 50 or more rounds. They are ideal for competitions or situations where reloading isn’t convenient but do add significant weight and bulk to the firearm.

Installation Guide πŸ› οΈ

Before you start, have your Glock 17, the magazine extension, and a Glock tool (or a similar tool that can depress the retaining pin) ready. Remember to adhere to standard firearm safety rules: ensure the firearm is unloaded, the magazine is empty, and you are in a safe environment.

βœ… Step 1: Remove the Baseplate: Depress the retaining pin at the bottom of the magazine using the Glock tool. While keeping the pin depressed, slide the baseplate off. Be careful as the spring is under tension and can propel the baseplate and locking plate off.

βœ… Step 2: Remove the Spring and Follower: Once the baseplate is off, you will see the magazine spring and follower. Remove these from the magazine tube by pulling them out from the top.

βœ… Step 3: Attach the Extension: Take your mag extension and align it with the bottom of the magazine tube. Note that most extensions have a built-in locking plate, so there’s no need to reinsert the old one.

βœ… Step 4: Insert the Spring and Follower: Before you insert the spring and follower into the extended magazine tube, check if your extension comes with a new, longer spring. If so, replace the original spring with this one. Insert the follower and spring back into the magazine tube.

βœ… Step 5: Secure the Extension: Slide the extension onto the magazine tube. You should hear a click when the locking plate snaps into place. This indicates that the extension is secure.

β• Remember, safety is paramount. Always treat your firearm as if it’s loaded, even if you’re sure it isn’t. Don’t point it at anything you aren’t prepared to destroy. Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot, and always be sure of your target and what’s behind it.

FAQ❓

What materials are used for manufacturing Glock 17 magazines?

These magazines are constructed with an amalgamation of high-quality materials, carefully chosen to withstand the most rigorous of uses.

The magazine body, responsible for securely holding the ammunition, boasts a hardened steel insert meticulously encased within a high-tech polymer shell. This ingenious combination not only enhances the magazine’s overall strength but also provides unparalleled resistance against wear and tear, ensuring its longevity even in the most demanding environments.

Delving deeper into the craftsmanship, the magazine spring, a vital component responsible for flawlessly feeding rounds into the firearm’s chamber, is meticulously crafted from premium-grade stainless steel. This carefully selected material not only exhibits exceptional resilience but also showcases remarkable resistance to corrosion, ensuring consistent and reliable performance over extended periods of use.

The follower, another integral part of the magazine, sits atop the spring, diligently guiding each round into the firearm. Crafted from a durable yet lightweight polymer, the follower strikes the perfect balance between robustness and weight, further enhancing the magazine’s overall performance. It is this thoughtful blend of materials that allows the Glock 17 magazine to maintain its lightweight nature without compromising on its durability or functionality.

It’s worth noting that certain magazine extensions may come equipped with a new, longer spring. The material used for these extensions may vary depending on the manufacturer and model, with options ranging from lightweight yet sturdy aluminium to advanced polymers. Regardless of the specific material, these extensions are designed to seamlessly integrate with the magazine, providing additional capacity while maintaining the same level of reliability and performance.

How much extra capacity does a Glock 17 magazine extension provide?

Magazine extensions for the Glock 17 can significantly increase the firearm’s ammunition capacity, providing shooters with more rounds before reloading. These extensions come in various models, each offering different levels of additional capacity to suit individual preferences.

🟑 For instance, some extensions can augment the Glock 17’s standard 17-round magazine to accommodate up to 30 rounds, giving shooters more firepower in their arsenal.

🟑 For those seeking the highest capacity possible, there is the option of a drum magazine, a cylindrical device capable of holding an impressive 50 or more rounds.

However, it’s important to consider that while these extensions enhance the firearm’s capacity, they also add to its weight and may potentially affect its balance, which could be a factor to consider for shooters looking for optimal performance.

Do Glock 17 and 19 take the same magazine?

While Glock 17 and Glock 19 are from the same manufacturer and share many common features, they do not take the same magazines due to differences in size.

πŸ”΅ The Glock 17 is larger and has a standard 17-round magazine, whereas the Glock 19 is slightly smaller, with a standard capacity of 15 rounds. However, it’s worth noting that the Glock 19 can use Glock 17 magazines for added capacity, but there will be a slight overhang because the magazine is longer. On the contrary, a Glock 17 cannot use Glock 19 magazines due to its larger size. Therefore, while these models share a significant amount of interoperability, magazine size is one of the key differences between the two.

Does Gen matter in Glock magazines?

Yes, the generation (Gen) of Glock pistols does matter when it comes to compatibility with certain magazines. Glock has developed five generations of pistols to date, with each generation featuring improvements and changes over the preceding one.

  • πŸ’  Gen1: This was the original Glock, introduced in the 1980s. It had a slick frame (no checkering) and a single pin above the trigger.
  • πŸ’  Gen2: Introduced in the early 1990s, the second-generation Glocks featured a stippled and checkered frame for improved grip, and retained the single-pin design.
  • πŸ’  Gen3: The third generation, released in the late 1990s, added finger grooves and thumb rests to the frame. They also introduced an accessory rail and a second pin above the trigger.
  • πŸ’  Gen4: Released in 2010, Gen4 Glocks had a more aggressive grip texturing and a multiple backstrap system, allowing users to modify the grip size to better fit their hands. Another new feature was a dual spring recoil assembly to reduce felt recoil. Gen4 magazines have a small notch cut on both sides of the magazine body, allowing the use of an ambidextrous magazine release.
  • πŸ’  Gen5: The most recent generation, introduced in 2017, removed the finger grooves from the Gen3 and Gen4 Glock, reverting to the straight grip design of the Gen1 and Gen2. Another notable change is the magazine well’s flared design for faster reloading. Gen5 magazines have an orange follower and an extended front lip.

Gen3, Gen4, and Gen5 Glock 17s and 19s can use the same magazines, but the ambidextrous magazine release feature will only work on Gen4 and Gen5 Glocks because of the aforementioned notch cut on the magazine. Gen1 and Gen2 Glocks have some compatibility restrictions, especially with the more recent Gen5 magazines. Always ensure to check for compatibility before purchasing any Glock magazines to avoid issues.

How to choose Glock 17 magazines?

Choosing a Glock 17 magazine involves several factors that need careful consideration to ensure optimal firearm performance. Here’s a basic guide to help you:

  1. ✳️ Capacity: The standard Glock 17 magazine holds 17 rounds. Depending on your needs, you could opt for a magazine extension to increase capacity, with options ranging from accommodating an extra few rounds to a drum magazine holding 50 or more rounds. Remember, however, that the increased capacity will add to the weight and possibly affect the balance of the firearm.
  2. ✳️ Material: The material of the magazine also plays a crucial role. Most Glock 17 magazines are made from a blend of stainless steel and durable, lightweight polymers to balance robustness and weight. If you’re considering an extension, the material may vary, with options including sturdy aluminium and advanced polymers.
  3. ✳️ Generation Compatibility: Glock has released five generations of pistols, each having specific features and compatibilities. While Gen3, Gen4, and Gen5 models can use the same magazines, Gen1 and Gen2 have some restrictions, especially with the newer Gen5 magazines. If your Glock 17 is a Gen4 or Gen5, ensure the magazine has a notch cut on both sides to accommodate the ambidextrous magazine release.
  4. ✳️ Manufacturer: Always opt for genuine Glock magazines or well-known, reputable third-party manufacturers to guarantee quality and reliability. Cheap, low-quality magazines can lead to various issues, including feeding problems and poor durability.

So, when you’re selecting a Glock 17 magazine, keep your specific needs and circumstances in mind, and always prioritize quality and compatibility to ensure reliable performance.

Conclusion🀩

Glock 17 magazine extensions offer numerous advantages for both professional and recreational shooters. Not only does an extension increase the ammunition capacity, but it also enhances grip, reduces reload time, mitigates recoil, and decreases the chances of malfunctions. From the simple extended floor plate to the high-capacity drum magazines, there’s a variety of options to suit different needs. Despite the added weight and potential alteration in the firearm’s balance, the benefits of these extensions make them a worthy investment for any Glock 17 owner. Whether it’s for a competitive shooting match or self-defence, mag extensions provide a crucial edge when it matters the most.

Thanks, everyone, for the awesome insights! I’m definitely leaning towards Glock magazines for reliability. And you’ve given me some good points to think about regarding extended magazines for the range.

I’ve experimented with aftermarket baseplates and springs on my Glock 17 mags. Just be cautious and make sure they’re reliable before depending on them. Sometimes these modifications can affect feeding reliability or cause the magazine to sit slightly off in the magwell.

I’ve tried a few third-party options, but I keep coming back to the originals. They just feed and function perfectly every time. Extended mags are awesome for fun days at the range, but remember, they might not be as comfortable for carry.

Can Glock 17 magazine extensions be easily removed or swapped out for different sizes?

βœ… Yes, Glock 17 magazine extensions can usually be easily removed or swapped out for different sizes, but the ease of removal can vary depending on the design of the specific extension and the manufacturer.

Most magazine extensions are designed to attach securely to the base of the magazine using screws, locking tabs, or other mechanisms. This allows them to be removed with basic tools like a screwdriver.

From my understanding, the original factory magazine spring is adequate if you are adding a +2 factory mag extension or a +3/4 Taran Tactical extension. However, if you choose to add a +5/6 extension, you’ll require a stronger spring.
I’m just curious, Have any of you experienced any problems by retaining the original spring while using the smaller mag extensions?
I’ve been an owner of numerous Glocks over the years, but I’ve never experimented with mag extensions.

πŸ€” Discussions around this topic suggest that retaining the original spring while using smaller mag extensions on a Glock 17 generally doesn’t pose a problem. Many Glock 17 owners have reported successful operation with the factory spring and smaller extensions.
β• However, as with any modifications, it’s recommended to test the setup thoroughly under various conditions to ensure reliable performance. Factors such as the type of ammunition used and wear on the original spring can influence functionality. This is just a general insight, and experiences might differ based on individual use cases.

To clarify the situation with Glock factory +2 magazine extensions: if you’re using a Glock 26 with a 10 round magazine, you don’t need to modify the spring when you add a Glock factory +2. That’s because the spring in the 10 round magazine is identical to the one in the 15 round Glock 19 magazine. However, things change when you’re dealing with a 17 round Glock 17 magazine. Adding a Glock factory +2 to this will necessitate a switch to the 11 Coil magazine spring. This is the one used in the Glock factory 19 round magazines and it ensures the reliability you would expect from a factory Glock.

Despite having Glock (+) base extensions 7151 with a wedge insert on my Glock 26/27 magazines, I’ve had no issues even after firing hundreds of rounds, using the standard factory spring. The same is true for my 17-round G-17 magazines, which can now hold, feed, and fire 20 rounds without any complications, once again, even after hundreds of rounds. Though it might seem sensible to buy an extra coil spring, I’ve found no need for it. Unfortunately, Glock doesn’t offer bases and springs as a set, so you’re obliged to purchase each item separately before you can include a (+) base.

Hello! Do Glock 17 magazine extensions affect the balance of the pistol?

🟒 Yes, Glock 17 magazine extensions can potentially affect the balance of the pistol to some extent. When you add a magazine extension to a Glock 17 magazine, you’re increasing the length of the grip. This can result in a slight shift in the weight distribution of the firearm, which in turn can influence the overall balance when holding and aiming the pistol.

πŸ›‘οΈ The additional length added by the magazine extension changes the leverage point where you hold the firearm, and this might impact the way the pistol feels in your hand. Some shooters might find that the balance feels different or slightly muzzle-heavy, while others might not notice a significant change.
