Gun Cleaning Buyer's Guide

In the good old days (18th and 19th centuries) you wouldn't be forced to brush your teeth twice a day and shower daily. I will say more, it was considered wrong and redundant. But when people became smarter, it turned out that the less dirt, the longer life lasts.

This also works with weapons. If you regularly maintain your arsenal, its performance will be unconditional and its accuracy even better. All you need is to choose the right tools and we will help you with this.

Most often we see weapons owners while on duty, at the shooting range, or while hunting, but this is only part of their life. Today we will look at all that remains hidden to most observers, all that can be called dirty work.

Weapon Cleaning Kits

Depending on the type of weapon and caliber, you need to select the appropriate tool. It may seem obvious, but we've met a “handyman” who tried to clean his guns using his wife's makeup bag. The funny thing is that it all worked out! But this gunsmith had to sleep on the sofa in the living room for several nights.

We won't judge this “master” or his angry wife, but just in case, we've got some great gunsmith kits ready. Each set contains a variety of specialized tools for weapons of different calibers, with different equipment for field and home storage. There is plenty to choose from here!

Weapon oils

gun oil
The next topic requires a basic understanding of chemistry. There are 3 main types of gun oils: neutral oil, alkaline oil, and universal oil.

The neutral oil is designed to lubricate the moving parts of the gun and provide basic protection to the metal components. With it, it will not be easy to wipe off the soot, but the duration of the cleaning corrects this.

Alkaline oil is good at counteracting soot, which consists of nitric acid. It is this acid that contributes to the appearance of various manifestations of corrosion, for example, “shells” on the metal. After removing carbon deposits with alkaline oil, it is necessary to treat all parts with neutral oil.

Universal oil acts in a complex way and can even have an antiseptic effect. If you need a simple and effective solution for solving most problems, it is recommended to use it.

There are also separate chemical mixtures intended to clean the barrel from copper and lead residues. But their use has its specifics and very often – a limited application time (no more than 15 minutes, after which the removal of this agent is required).

Read the specification carefully and choose what will become the elixir of youth (or eternal life) for your weapon.

Technical warning requires caution, rigor, and special tools of the gunsmith. All-in-one kits to fit your entire arsenal should be comfortable, functional, and affordable. The price is also important because there can be several sets.

One basic set can be found in your workshop/gun room, and a compact set can be found in a gun bag for field use. We have already found all the cool offers and collected them in a separate review.

Bore Snakes

The debate about which is better – a drill kite or a hard ramrod, will last as long as at least two gunsmiths are alive. Each cleaning method has its own advantages and disadvantages, but it is a fact that the drill kite is much less demanding.

Although the structure of the drill kites is the same (brass weight, thin cord, thick cord, and brushes), they can differ significantly in components, quality, and price. Here are the most popular offers of online storefronts. Choose the one that suits your caliber and click the buy button.
