As a 6.5 Creedmoor is quite widely used, there are enough reliable components for quality rifle upgrading. The AR platform can be adaptable with caliber multitude and corresponding barrels.

Best 6.5 Creedmoor Barrel - Editor's Choice

If you are infatuated with your basic rifle because of its great fit and comfy operation but want to try a 6.5 Creedmoor caliber, just change the barrel.

Why do we need a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel?

Barrels are considered as a consumable part because while firing after some time wear happens in the throat area of the chamber end and on the rifling, caused by the burning powder, chamber pressure, and friction. It’s recommended to change the barrel after 5000 rounds, as the worn old one can affect the firing accuracy.

How to Install 6.5 Creedmoor Barrel

  • The rifle should be unloaded while mounting the barrel.
  • Remove the complete AR upper receiver, and optics with accessories, which are attached to the upper.
  • There are plenty of various handguards on the AR 10 and AR 15 rifles, but removal is about the same (free-floating handguards are fastened by 6 screws), just twist them off.
  • After removing the front handguards, then do the same with the gas block and tube; a barrel nut might be undone with AR 10/15 Armorer’s wrench. To detach the flasher suppressor, secure the upper receiver into the vise using a vise block, and slide it off the gas block.
  • Before mounting a new barrel, clean the upper receiver, washing out each piece using a solvent. Clean threads for the barrel nut and check their serviceableness.
  • While sliding the barrel chamber end into the upper receiver, where the locating pin should fit snugly into the slot without rotation.
  • The barrel nut should be indexed properly, depending on the used front handguard, and tightened with torque about 30 to 45 Ft/Lb for duly aligned.
  • Then slide on the gas block and align it on the barrel top. You can check the gas block alignment to the barrel by drilling through the gas tube with compressed air and feel air coming out of the barrel. After tightening the gas block, slide the front handguard over the barrel, fastening it with the original screws.
  • Install the muzzle brake or flash suppressor by using a crush wash to lock one of these devices in place, tightening until the ports are aligned duly, but don’t overtighten.
  • If there is no crush washer apply a small amount of red Loctite to the barrel threads,
  • Screw on the muzzle device and tighten.
  • It’s time to check headspace on the new barrel by setting its gauges in the caliber you are firing with (three sizes: Go, No Go, and Field gauges).
  • If you define any headspace issues, contact the barrel manufacturer or take the rifle to a gunsmith.
  • Re-assemble optics or other accessories back onto the rail. Then clean out the trigger group and lube it. The last step is to connect the upper to the lower receiver.

FAQ

What causes the barrel wear?
There is protective rifling in the barrel, but anyway friction between the barrel and the soft copper jacket on the bullet every shot leads to the inner surface wear.
How long is an average barrel life?
It depends on the barrel material durability and shot quantity. It’s better to change the barrel from 3000 to 5000 rounds if you want to keep on accurate firing.

Conclusion

Mind upgrading the barrel from .308 Winchester to the 6.5 Creedmoor will be cost-effective, as these cartridge sizes are almost identical, you can still use the same bolt assembly and magazines.

Remember that certain calibers will operate better at particular barrel lengths (should match the chosen round). Check the length functionality as well. A 6.5 Creedmoor needs an extended rifle length system. A 20-inch length for a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel will be appropriate both for hunting and target shooting.
