Best 10/22 Barrel - Editor's Choice

The Ruger 10/22 is in favor due to its convenience in handling, almost unfelt recoil, lightweight, value-for-money. Still, it’s possible to try something new and upgrade the 10/22 barrel on hiking rifles to reach better results in speed or competitive shooting, target practice, or small game hunting.

Why do we need a 10/22 barrel?

It is popular and easy to renew the Ruger 10/22 carbine by installing a modern barrel to enhance accuracy and make the rifle lighter. The upgraded barrel allows mounting the scope on it, not on the receiver. 10/22 barrels can be threaded or not, usually come without functionally unnecessary bands. Magazine tubes and barrel bands can affect accuracy. Therefore, pull the bands to check if the magazine tube is at a 15- or 20-degree downward angle, as they can be in tension after installation.

How to install a 10/22 Barrel

The original 10/22 Manual will come in handy to remove the stock. You need to loosen the barrel band, sliding it forward off the forend, then unfasten the take-down screw (keep it safe for installation) on the stock bottom with a 5/32 Allen wrench and lift the barrel out of the stock and from the receiver by twisting. For easier pulling out, you can use a barrel vise or the Pusher Tool for 10/22 Barrel (helps align the barrel properly as well, using anchor points in the 10/22 receiver without scratching). A new Match Barrel installation should be done in reverse turn of the removal. Slide the new barrel into the receiver, line up and tighten the V-Block, then put it into the stock. If the barrel is too hard to fit into the receiver, you can sand lightly the surface with 600 grit emery cloth.

How to Clean Ruger 10/22 Barrel

  • Dirty chambers can cause any failures to feed or extract rounds.
  • It’s recommended to maintain the rifle duly and regularly and clean it every time after exposing adverse conditions: dust, sand, condensation, extreme humidity, immersion in water.
  • Before cleaning, be sure the Ruger and its magazine are unloaded.
  • There are two ways of cleaning: quick (from the muzzle end) and proper one (from the receiver end). Use a bore cleaning solution and a brass brush.
  • While duly cleaning you should disassemble the rifle, removing the bolt and trigger assemblies (brush them as well) to have the best-accessed angle to the barrel. It’s necessary to remove powder residue from all mechanism components.
  • While fast cleaning, with the rifle intact (no need to remove the barrel), at the muzzle end, run a properly sized cleaning rod with a solvent-wetted patch through the bore a few times and into the chamber and bolt area to catch and absorb fouling and chemicals to push them out. After cleaning, run a dry patch through the bore, and follow with a bit oiled rag.
  • When cleaning from the muzzle, it’s important not to damage the crown with the rod and attachments.

FAQ

What is the most accurate barrel for a Ruger 10 22?
The Beyer Barrels Ruger 10/22 is an ultralight, long-lasting, rust-resistant target barrel, which allows enhancing the 10/22 accuracy, without significant extra weight, comparatively with other brand barrels.
Is it OK to dry fire a Ruger 10 22?
It’s better not to dry fire a Ruger 10/22, as the firing pin can strike the chamber.
A Ruger 10-22 fires a rimfire cartridge, so the firing pin strikes the round rim instead of the center.
Can I put a bull barrel on my 10 22?
Yes, you can put a .920 bull barrel on a factory Ruger 10/22. The bull barrel diameter (.920) for its entire length, usual 10/22 barrel starts at .920 and tapers down.

Conclusion

You should be aware of the installation peculiarity: the standard Match 10/22 barrels almost have no taper (.920″ in diameter), so they will not fit in the standard factory stock barrel channel. It would be necessary either to open up the barrel channel of the factory stock with woodworking tools or to purchase an aftermarket 10/22 stock, which is engineered to be compatible with the .920″ diameter Match 10/22 barrel.

Remember that it’s urgent to keep clean the blow-back operated auto-loading rifle and its barrel (even upgraded) correspondingly to ensure good shooting performance. The best plinking package can be reached by upgrading the 10/22 barrel and adding a brace and a binary trigger.
