  • Recoil: Mild (.357 SIG) vs. Moderate (10mm Auto)
  • Availability: Widely available (both)
  • Cost: Similar

The .357 SIG is a newer cartridge that was developed in the 1990s. It is essentially a shortened version of the .357 Magnum cartridge, with a shorter case and a lighter bullet. This makes it easier to handle in a semi-automatic pistol, while still retaining much of the stopping power of the .357 Magnum.

The 10mm Auto is an older cartridge that was developed in the 1980s. It is a larger and more powerful cartridge than the .357 SIG, but it can also be more difficult to handle in a semi-automatic pistol.

Ultimately, the best cartridge for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for a cartridge that is easy to handle and has mild recoil, then the .357 SIG is a good option. If you are looking for a cartridge that has more stopping power, then the 10mm Auto is a better choice.

What is the difference between 357 sig VS 9 mm?

Here is a detailed comparison of the .357 Sig and 9mm cartridges:

Bullet diameter: Both cartridges use a .355-inch bullet.
Case length: The .357 Sig has a shorter case length (1.14 inches) than the 9mm (1.24 inches). This makes it easier to handle in a semi-automatic pistol, but it also means that it can’t hold as many rounds as the 9mm.
Muzzle velocity: The .357 Sig has a higher muzzle velocity than the 9mm. A standard 125-grain bullet will have a muzzle velocity of 1350 fps, while a 124-grain bullet fired from a 9mm will have a muzzle velocity of 1150 fps.
Availability: Both cartridges are widely available.
Recoil: The .357 Sig has more recoil than the 9mm. This is because it has a larger bullet and a higher muzzle velocity.
Cost: The cost of both cartridges is similar.

Here are some additional things to consider when choosing between these cartridges:

  • ✔️ Your skill level: If you are a beginner shooter, the 9mm may be a better choice for you. It has less recoil, which makes it easier to control.
  • ✔️ Your intended use: If you are looking for a cartridge for self-defence, the .357 may be a better choice. It has more stopping power, which could be important in a life-or-death situation.
  • ✔️ The type of gun you want to use: Not all guns are chambered for both ammo. If you have a specific gun in mind, make sure to check to see which cartridges it can fire.

We can assure you that this video will certainly clarify the difference📺

How does .357 Sig recoil compare to other calibers?

The recoil of this cartridge is generally perceived to be snappier and more energetic compared to some other popular handgun calibres. This is due to several factors, including the cartridge’s high velocity and relatively high chamber pressure.

Here’s a general comparison:

  1. 🔰 9mm Luger (9x19mm): Generally has less perceived recoil. It’s a popular choice for its balance of manageable recoil and effective performance.
  2. 🔰 .40 S&W: Recoil can be similar to or slightly sharper, depending on the specific firearm. Some shooters may find the recoil of the .40 S&W to be snappy as well.
  3. 🔰 .45 ACP: Typically has a softer, more pushing recoil. Many shooters find.45 ACP to be more manageable.
  4. 🔰 10mm Auto: Can have significantly more recoil, especially when loaded to full power. It’s known for its stout recoil, especially in lighter handguns.
  5. .🔰 380 ACP: Generally has less recoil, making it a popular choice for smaller or lightweight handguns.
  6. 🔰 .38 Special/.357 Magnum: The recoil of .357 Sig is often compared to the recoil of .357 Magnum rounds fired from revolvers. The .357 Magnum can have significant recoil, especially in lightweight revolvers.

It’s important to note that perceived recoil can be influenced by factors such as firearm weight, grip design, ammunition load, and individual shooter preferences and experiences. Shooters should always practice proper grip and stance techniques to manage recoil effectively and improve shooting accuracy.

What is the effective range of .357 Sig?

The effective range can vary based on several factors, including the specific firearm, the shooter’s skill level, and the intended use of the ammunition. Generally, handguns are considered to be effective at relatively short to moderate distances, with the focus primarily on self-defence and close-quarters engagement.

For this ammo, its effective range is typically considered to be within 50 to 100 yards (45 to 90 meters) for most practical purposes. However, its accuracy and terminal performance will naturally decrease as the distance increases. Keep in mind that hitting a target with precision becomes progressively more challenging at greater distances due to factors such as bullet drop, wind drift, and the limitations of handgun sights.

For law enforcement and self-defence scenarios, the majority of engagements occur within 7 to 25 yards (6 to 23 meters), which is often referred to as the “typical engagement distance.” Handguns are designed to excel in these close-quarters situations where quick target acquisition and stopping power are important.

Remember that effective range can vary depending on the shooter’s skill level, the firearm’s inherent accuracy, and the ammunition used. It’s essential to practice regularly and become proficient with your chosen firearm and calibre to maximize its effective range in real-world situations.

Conclusion🤩

The .357 Sig ammo stands as a versatile and reliable choice for various applications, from law enforcement to self-defence, target shooting, and even hunting. Its unique design offers high velocity, impressive stopping power, and excellent barrier penetration. However, like all ammunition, it requires responsible handling and proper safety measures. Whether you’re a seasoned shooter or a beginner, understanding and respecting the capabilities of the ammo can help ensure a safe and successful shooting experience.

Every time you handle your ammo and firearm, remember: that safety is paramount.

I possess both .45ACP weapons, with my first purchase being the 1911, specifically the Taurus PT1911. This firearm delivers performance comparable to top-tier 1911s available on the market. Later, I was introduced to the .357 SIG due to its ballistic performance being on par with the .45 ACP. The .357 SIG is a “Staggered Column” weapon, meaning it provides the same level of efficacy as larger caliber rounds but with the advantage of high-capacity magazines. In summary, the .357 SIG round is notably powerful.

The law enforcement officers in my region have seen such impressive results with the .357sig that it’s hard to perceive it as merely equivalent to a traditional 9mm. The increased speed undeniably triggers a more substantial impact. A buddy of mine conducted a test with the .357sig, and the damage it inflicted on his target far exceeded that of the 40cal.

No, you should not attempt to shoot .357 Sig ammunition in a firearm chambered for .40 S&W. While the two cartridges have similar case dimensions, they are not interchangeable, and attempting to fire .357 Sig in a .40 S&W firearm can be extremely dangerous.

        Here’s why:

🔵 Pressure Difference: .357 Sig ammunition typically operates at higher chamber pressures compared to .40 S&W. Firing .357 Sig ammunition in a .40 S&W chamber can lead to dangerously high pressures that could cause catastrophic failures in the firearm, potentially injuring the shooter and damaging the firearm.

🔵 Mismatched Chamber Dimensions: The chambers of firearms designed for .40 S&W and .357 Sig are not identical. The case dimensions of .357 Sig are different from those of .40 S&W, and attempting to chamber and fire a .357 Sig cartridge in a .40 S&W chamber can result in misfeeds, jams, and other malfunctions.

🔵 Safety Concerns: Mixing ammunition and firearms that are not designed to work together is a serious safety risk. It can result in severe injury or death to the shooter and bystanders.

Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and use only the appropriate ammunition for your firearm. If you’re interested in shooting .357 Sig, it’s advisable to use a firearm specifically designed and chambered for that caliber. Similarly, if you own a firearm chambered in .40 S&W, only use ammunition that is specifically labeled as .40 S&W.

A notable advantage of the .357 Sig is that it remains one of the scarce ammunition calibres consistently available in firearms shops. LOL

)))) Indeed, you’re right. My firearm of choice is the Glock 33, and I never seem to have a shortage of ammunition for it. As a matter of fact, just today I procured four boxes of defence ammo at a steal for 18.99 a box. The store I frequent had an impressive stock of over 50 boxes between DRT and Hornady critical defence.

Hello. Thank you. Quite clear. Just one question. Does .357 Sig have better penetration than 9mm?

                    Natalia

Yes, generally speaking, .357 Sig ammunition tends to have better penetration compared to standard 9mm ammunition. This is primarily due to the higher muzzle velocity and increased energy of the .357 Sig cartridge.

🟢 The .357 Sig cartridge typically fires a smaller, lighter bullet at a higher velocity compared to most standard 9mm loads. The increased velocity results in higher kinetic energy and momentum, which can lead to improved penetration through barriers and clothing, as well as better penetration in some instances of self-defense scenarios.

🔴 However, it’s important to note that while .357 Sig may offer better penetration, this characteristic comes with trade-offs. The increased velocity and energy can also contribute to increased recoil, muzzle blast, and potentially over-penetration concerns in certain situations.
