Best Shoulder Holster

What is a shoulder holster?🤓

It is a type of holster that allows you to carry your firearm in a horizontal position on the side or back of your body. The most common way to wear a such holster is with two straps over each shoulder, connecting to one belt around the waist.

Shoulder holsters

Features✍️

Shoulder holsters are a great choice for those who need a comfortable, versatile option for carrying their firearm. These holsters offer several important features that can help make concealed or open carry of your weapon both easier and safer.

  • ✅ The most important feature is their adjustable straps. Most holsters have two straps, one over the shoulder and the other along the ribcage. These adjustable straps allow you to customize how snugly your holster fits so that it can be comfortable while also providing secure retention of your weapon.
  • ✅ These holsters also typically feature a thumb break that secures your firearm in place. This is similar to the snap closure on most hip holsters, but it helps prevent accidental movement of your gun and possible injury or loss of control of your weapon during activities like jogging or climbing.
  • ✅ Another key feature is their ability to distribute weight evenly across both shoulders, which can alleviate fatigue from carrying heavy firearms for long periods. Many models are also designed with compartments for extra magazines, which can make it easier to quickly reload your gun without having to fumble around in a pocket or purse.
  • ✅ Such holsters also provide excellent concealment options, with some models designed to be worn under clothing and others offering special features like camo patterns or extra straps that add a layer of privacy. This makes them especially popular with law enforcement personnel who need a discreet way to carry their firearm while on duty.

Benefits🤩

Shoulder holsters provide a convenient and comfortable way to carry a handgun. They are designed to be worn around the torso, just below the shoulder, and distribute the weight of the weapon evenly, allowing for easy access when needed. These holsters offer users several advantages over other types of holsters.

  • ⭐️ Their structured design is more secure than traditional belts or thigh holsters, reducing the chances that your firearm will fall during movement or become exposed accidentally. The straps provide an added layer of support that helps keep it in place while you’re on the go.
  • ⭐️ Furthermore, since you only have one hand free when using, it reduces the risk of firearm-related accidents.
  • ⭐️ A such holster is also more comfortable than many other options because its position makes it easier to reach your gun without having to strain or bend too far forward. It also keeps your gun away from your body so you don’t have to worry about sweating or discomfort from contact with your skin.

Benefits of a shoulder holster

Wearing and adjusting🤠

When it comes to having a secure and comfortable way to carry a handgun, the best shoulder holster system can be an ideal option. Not only is it a great way to conceal a weapon, but it also allows for quick access when needed.

  • ➡️ First and foremost, make sure the holster fits comfortably under your arm without being too tight. You should be able to move freely without feeling as though it is constricting you or cutting off circulation. It should also fit securely so that your firearm doesn’t shift out of place when you move.
  • ➡️ Once you’ve found the right size, make sure the straps are adjusted properly. You should feel comfortable in all positions while wearing the holster; meaning that if you raise or lower your arm, or lean forward or backward–the gun should remain in place.
  • ➡️ Next, adjust the chest strap so that the weight of your weapon is evenly distributed across both shoulders for extra support and comfort. This helps prevent slippage when bending over or turning quickly, something that can happen with other types of holsters where one side takes all of the weight of the gun instead of being spread out between both shoulders equally.
  • ➡️ Finally, make sure you practice drawing from this type of holster before relying on it in real-life situations. It may take some time to get used to drawing from a holster system since they tend to require more movement than other types of holsters, such as hip holsters or pocket holsters.

Four different angles of holster positions💡

A shoulder holster is a great way to comfortably and securely carry a firearm. It provides quick access and freedom of movement when necessary. There are four main angles for positioning a such holster:

  • ⏰ With the cross-draw position, the weapon is positioned low on the torso and slightly away from the body in an angled orientation. This is an effective position when seated or when staying close to other people to make it harder for someone to grab your gun.
  • ⏰ The vertical draw offers more concealed carry options due to its location near the armpit. The weapon is drawn straight up from the holster toward the target, allowing for fast reactions with minimal movement of the arm. This option works well when standing or walking as it distributes weight evenly across the chest area.
  • ⏰ The horizontal draw is similar to a cross draw but places the gun even lower on the hip making it easier to access while seated. The angle of this approach makes it less likely that someone would be able to reach over and take your weapon away from you because it will be hard for them to reach around you without going underneath your arm first.
  • ⏰ Finally, there’s also a 45-degree draw that provides quick access while still being concealed under clothing. It places the gun at an angle between a vertical and horizontal orientation that can be adjusted by reaching around your body with one hand while keeping your elbow tucked in close towards your side. This option helps distribute weight evenly across both shoulders while providing easy access to your gun without having to move too much of your upper body out of position.

FAQ😎

When should you shoulder carry?

✳️ Shoulder carrying refers to a method of carrying a firearm or weapon on the shoulder, typically using a sling or strap. Here are some scenarios where it may be appropriate:

  • 🔷 Convenience and Accessibility: Shoulder carrying can be convenient when you need quick and easy access to your firearm or weapon. It allows you to keep the weapon readily available and within reach, especially in situations where you anticipate the need for immediate deployments, such as during hunting or certain tactical operations.
  • 🔷 Extended Carrying: If you anticipate carrying your firearm or weapon for an extended period, shoulder carrying can offer a comfortable and balanced way to distribute the weight. The use of a properly adjusted sling can help reduce fatigue and strain on the arms and hands compared to carrying the weapon solely in the hands.
  • 🔷 Hands-Free Activities: Shoulder carrying can be advantageous during hands-free activities that require mobility or the use of both hands. For example, when engaged in tasks such as climbing, navigating rough terrain, carrying other equipment, or performing specific duties that require freedom of movement, shoulder carrying keeps the firearm accessible while leaving the hands available for other tasks.
  • 🔷 Concealed Carry: Shoulder carrying can be an option for concealed carry purposes, particularly with larger firearms or in situations where traditional hip or waist holsters may not be practical or comfortable. Under specific circumstances, shoulder holsters or harnesses can provide effective concealed carry options while allowing for easy access and comfort.
How high should a shoulder holster be?

🟪 The height at which a shoulder holster should be worn can vary depending on personal preference, body shape, and the specific design of the holster. However, there are some general guidelines to consider:

  • ✔️ Accessibility: These holsters should be positioned high enough so that the firearm is easily accessible and can be drawn comfortably. The grip of the firearm should be positioned in a location that allows for a natural and quick draw motion.
  • ✔️ Concealment: It should be worn at a height that enables effective concealment of the firearm. It should be concealed under clothing, with the holster and firearm not protruding or printing excessively. The exact height may vary based on the length of the firearm and the individual’s body shape.
  • ✔️ Comfort: It is important to find a height that is comfortable for extended periods of wear. The holster should not dig into the shoulder or cause discomfort or irritation. Adjusting the straps and harness of the holster to achieve a comfortable fit is essential.
  • ✔️ Stability: The holster should be positioned high enough to provide stability and prevent excessive movement or shifting during physical activity. It should stay securely in place without bouncing or swinging.
Can you run with a such holster?

🏃 Running with a shoulder holster can be challenging and is generally not recommended. These holsters are designed to provide comfortable and accessible carry for firearms during regular activities, such as walking or standing. However, running or engaging in vigorous physical activities with a such holster can present several issues:

  • 💥 Stability and Comfort: They may not provide the necessary stability and support to securely hold the firearm in place during high-impact movements like running. The bouncing and jostling motion can cause the holster to shift or move, which can be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.
  • 💥 Draw and Retention: Running with a holster can make it more difficult to draw the firearm quickly and safely. The bouncing and movement of the body can hinder smooth and efficient access to the firearm, potentially causing delays or difficulties in deploying the weapon when needed.
  • 💥 Safety Concerns: Running with a loaded firearm introduces additional safety risks. The increased physical activity and movement can increase the chances of accidental discharges or unintended manipulations of the firearm. It is crucial to prioritize firearm safety at all times, and running with a loaded firearm may not be the best practice.

➡️ If you need to engage in physical activities that involve running or vigorous movement, it is generally recommended to consider alternative carry methods such as a securely fitted waistband holster, thigh holster, or other specialized holsters designed for active use.

Is a shoulder holster open carry?

✴️ A shoulder holster can be used for both open carry and concealed carry, depending on the circumstances and local laws.

  • ✒️ Open carry refers to carrying a firearm in a manner where it is visible and not concealed. In some jurisdictions, open carry may be allowed, either without any specific restrictions or with certain regulations in place. In such cases, a shoulder holster can be used to openly carry a firearm on the shoulder, with the holster and firearm visible to others.
  • ✒️ However, it is important to note that the legality and regulations surrounding open carry vary widely depending on the country, state, or even local jurisdiction. Laws can dictate where and when open carry is permitted, specify any licensing or permits required, and may impose restrictions on the types of firearms that can be openly carried.

📌 Furthermore, in many areas, the use of a shoulder holster may be more commonly associated with concealed carry. When worn under clothing, the shoulder holster can effectively conceal the firearm, making it less visible to others.

Is such holster good for concealed carry?

📢 A shoulder holster can be a viable option for concealed carry, but its suitability depends on various factors and personal preferences. Here are some considerations to keep in mind:

  • ☑️ Clothing Choice: These holsters typically require wearing an outer garment, such as a jacket or coat, to effectively conceal the firearm. This can limit their practicality in warm climates or situations where wearing a cover garment is impractical. The choice of clothing should be appropriate for concealing the holster and firearm adequately.
  • ☑️ Body Type and Comfort: The fit and comfort of a holster can vary depending on an individual’s body shape and size. It is important to ensure that the holster fits properly, securely holds the firearm, and remains concealed without causing discomfort or excessive printing.
  • ☑️ Accessibility and Draw Speed: They can provide good accessibility and a smooth draw when properly set up. However, it may take some practice and training to become proficient at quickly and efficiently drawing the firearm from a shoulder holster. Consider the accessibility and draw speed in different situations, including seated positions or confined spaces.
  • ☑️ Retention and Security: The holster should provide proper retention and security for the firearm to prevent unintended access or loss of the weapon. Ensure that the holster securely holds the firearm in place during normal movements and physical activities.
  • ☑️ Concealment Effectiveness: Assess how effectively this holster conceals the firearm based on your body type, the size and shape of the firearm, and the clothing worn. Avoid printing or exposing the firearm unintentionally, as it could compromise concealment.
Can you wear it under a shirt?

✅ Wearing a shoulder holster under a shirt is generally not recommended or practical for most shoulder holsters. They are typically designed to be worn with an outer garment, such as a jacket or coat, that provides coverage and concealment for the firearm.

➡️ There are a few reasons why wearing it under a shirt may not be ideal:

  • Comfort and Fit: These holsters are typically bulkier than other types of holsters and may not sit flat against the body. Wearing a shoulder holster directly under a shirt can cause discomfort, restrict movement, and result in printing (visible outlines of the firearm through the fabric), which can compromise concealment.
  • Accessibility and Draw Speed: Placing a holster under a shirt can hinder quick and efficient access to the firearm. Drawing the firearm from under a shirt can be slower and more challenging compared to accessing it from an outer garment specifically designed for concealment.
  • Printing and Exposure: Wearing it directly under a shirt increases the likelihood of printing, where the outline or bulge of the firearm is visible through the fabric. This can attract attention and potentially reveal the presence of a concealed firearm, defeating the purpose of concealed carry.

😉 If you prefer to wear a holster for concealed carry, it is recommended to use it with an appropriate cover garment, such as a jacket, coat, or vest. These outer garments provide the necessary coverage to effectively conceal the holster and firearm.

Conclusion😊

Shoulder holsters are an excellent choice for concealed carry and can be a great way to keep your firearm close at hand. With the right holster, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that it’s comfortable and secure while still providing easy access. We hope this buyer’s guide has helped guide you through your search for the perfect holster. Remember to consider comfort, security features, construction quality, and adjustability options when shopping around – these factors will ensure you get exactly what suits your needs!🥰❤️‍🔥

I’m looking to carry my Glock 17 in a shoulder rig when I ride my motorcycle, under my vest. I’m curious if anyone here has personal experience with such a setup and can recommend any good shoulder holsters for this purpose.

I’m looking for recommendations on reputable companies that manufacture shoulder holsters. With fall approaching, I tend to wear flannel shirts a lot, which allows for better concealment of my M17 without sacrificing comfort. I appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thank you in advance.

Hello everyone, during this quarantine period, I’ve been binge-watching a lot of Miami Vice, and it got me thinking about the stylish yet impractical shoulder holsters featured in the show. While I acknowledge that there are much more practical carry options available today, such as appendix carry, I can’t help but be curious about shoulder holsters. Although I wouldn’t rely on them for personal defense, I’d like to hear from individuals who have carried with a shoulder holster, whether as law enforcement officers or private citizens. I’m interested in knowing what worked for you and what didn’t. What type of firearm were you carrying? Did you use a horizontally or vertically oriented holster?

I carried with Galco Great Alaskan Shoulder System when I first started carrying concealed several years ago. The firearms I carried in shoulder holsters included 92FS, 1911, and HK P2000, all in a horizontal orientation. I made sure to practice my drawing technique in a manner that avoided sweeping myself. I was also aware of the slower draw speed and the potential challenges of retaining the pistol compared to a belt-mounted option. Due to these considerations, I adjusted my overall tactics.

I own a nice Galco Jackass Shoulder Rigs. I prefer carrying my firearm at the 4:00 position or appendix carry, depending on the specific firearm and the level of concealment I want to achieve. However, I do recognize that shoulder holsters can be very useful in certain situations. When wearing an overcoat, suit, or loose button-up shirt, they can provide excellent concealment. While it’s true that the draw is not as quick or efficient as with other holsters, shoulder holsters still offer a viable option.

I’m currently exploring affordable options for a shoulder rig as the fleece vest and jacket season approaches. Cost-effectiveness is a key factor for me, so I’m looking for an affordable option that doesn’t compromise on quality. Your input and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I use the Galco Classic Lite Shoulder System Holster and Galco Miami Classic Shoulder Handgun Holster System. If you’re new to shoulder carry, I highly recommend trying the Galco Classic Lite Shoulder System Holster first. It’s lightweight, compact, and affordable. The key to shoulder holsters is finding the perfect fit and ensuring it’s adjusted correctly. If it’s not properly fitted, you won’t enjoy using it. Personally, once I put on my shoulder holster, I often forget it’s even there. It’s particularly great for long car rides and walks.

If you’re in immediate need of a shoulder rig, I would recommend going for a DeSantis Right Hand Tan New York Undercover Shoulder Holster. My advice would be not to skimp on quality and to remember that you often get what you pay for.
