Best 22-250 Ammo

What is 22-250 Ammo?🧐

It is a type of ammunition that is used in .22-250 Remington rifles. It is a very high-velocity cartridge, capable of reaching speeds of over 4,000 feet per second. This makes it an excellent choice for varmint hunting and small game hunting, as it can deliver a devastating impact on even small targets.

It is typically made up of a brass cartridge case, a bullet, and a powder charge. The cartridge case is the part that holds the bullet and powder, and it is made of brass because it is a strong and durable material. The bullet is the part that actually strikes the target, and it is typically made of a lead alloy or a copper-jacketed lead alloy. The powder charge is the propellant that ignites and propels the bullet down the barrel of the rifle.

Effective Range📏

The effective range of .22-250 depends on a number of factors, including the bullet weight, the type of target, and the shooter’s skill. However, in general, it is typically considered to be between 400 and 500 yards.

Here are some factors that can affect the effective range:

  • Bullet weight: Heavier bullets will have more energy and will therefore be effective at longer ranges. Lighter bullets will have less energy and will therefore be effective at shorter ranges.
  • Type of target: The type of target will also affect the effective range. For example, a small, fast-moving target will require a shorter effective range than a larger, slower-moving target.
  • Shooter’s skill: The shooter’s skill will also affect the effective range of .22-250. A skilled shooter will be able to hit targets at longer ranges than a less skilled shooter.

Reloading⚙️

The process of reloading involves assembling individual cartridges from components, such as brass cases, bullets, and powder. This allows shooters to customize their ammunition to their specific needs and preferences.

There are many different factors to consider when reloading 22-250 cartridges, such as the type of bullet, the amount of powder, and the seating depth of the bullet. It is important to follow safe reloading practices and to use high-quality components to ensure the safety and accuracy of your ammunition.

Here are some of the benefits of reloading:

  • ✴️ You can customize your ammunition to your specific needs. This includes choosing the right bullet weight, type, and velocity for your target or game.
  • ✴️ You can save money by reloading your own ammunition. The cost of reloading components is typically much lower than the cost of factory-loaded ammunition.
  • ✴️ It is a fun and rewarding hobby. Reloading can be a great way to learn more about firearms and ammunition, and it can be a lot of fun to experiment with different loads.

When reloading, start by choosing the right components. The bullet needs to be a .224″ diameter and commonly used weights range from 40 to 55 grains. For the powder, stick with a medium burning one, like the Varget or H380.

The preparation of the brass is then key to successful reloading. Begin by cleaning the brass, either by tumbling or ultrasonic methods, to ensure the removal of any dirt or debris. After cleaning, deprime and resize the brass using a full-length resizing die. Then, take a moment to inspect your brass for any cracks, splits, or other signs of damage.

Next is the priming stage. Using a primer seating tool, insert a new primer into the brass. Always ensure it is seated correctly and flush with the base.

The powder charge is next. As always, start with a conservative load and work your way up. It’s absolutely essential to use a reliable scale to measure the powder weight accurately.

Lastly is the seating of the bullet. Adjust your seating die according to your desired bullet depth, and then run your brass through.

Consistency and attention to detail are vital when reloading your .22-250 Remington. Always remember: safety is paramount when dealing with firearms and ammo!

FAQ❓

What is the bullet size and weight of .22-250 ammo?

The bullet size of this ammo is 0.224 inches in diameter. This is equivalent to 5.69 millimetres. The bullet weight typically ranges from 40 to 75 grains. A grain is a unit of mass equal to 1/7000 of a pound. Here is a table of some common bullet sizes and weights for .22-250 ammo:

Bullet Size Bullet Weight Grains
.224 inches 40 grains 26 grams
.224 inches 55 grains 3.6 grams
.224 inches 62 grains 40 grams
.224 inches 75 grains 49 grams
What type of game is .22-250 suitable for hunting?

It is a high-velocity cartridge that is typically used for varmint hunting and small game hunting. It is capable of reaching speeds of over 4,000 feet per second, which makes it an excellent choice for taking down small, fast-moving targets.

It can be used to hunt a variety of game, including:

  • ✅ Varmints: This includes animals such as prairie dogs, groundhogs, coyotes, and foxes.
  • ✅ Small game: This includes animals such as rabbits, squirrels, and marmots.
  • ✅ Deer: This ammo can be used to hunt deer, but it is not the most ideal cartridge for this purpose. The bullet is not as large as some other cartridges, and it may not have enough stopping power to take down a deer cleanly.

It is important to note that the .22-250 is not a suitable cartridge for hunting large game, such as elk or moose. The bullet is simply not large enough to cause enough damage to these animals.

If you are considering using it for hunting, it is important to consult with a wildlife expert to make sure that it is the right cartridge for the game you are planning to hunt. You should also make sure that you are using the correct bullet weight and type for the game you are targeting.

Here are some additional factors to consider when using it for hunting:

  • ✔️ Range: It is a very accurate cartridge, but it is not as effective at long range as some other cartridges. This is because the bullet loses velocity quickly, so it may not have enough energy to take down a game animal at long range.
  • ✔️ Trajectory: It has a very flat trajectory, which makes it easy to hit targets at long range. However, the trajectory will start to drop off at distances over 300 yards, so you will need to take this into account when making your shots.
  • ✔️ Recoil: It has a relatively mild recoil, which makes it a good choice for hunters who are not used to shooting high-powered cartridges. However, the recoil can still be noticeable, so you may want to use a rifle with a light recoil pad.

Overall, the .22-250 is a versatile cartridge that can be used for a variety of hunting purposes. It is a good choice for varmint hunting and small game hunting, but it is not the most ideal cartridge for hunting large game. If you are considering using it for hunting, it is important to consult with a wildlife expert to make sure that it is the right cartridge for the game you are planning to hunt. You should also make sure that you are using the correct bullet weight and type for the game you are targeting.

What are the types of .22-250 ammo?

There are many different types of .22-250 ammo available, each with its own unique characteristics. The most common types include:

  • ☑️ Varmint loads: These loads are designed for taking down small, fast-moving targets, such as prairie dogs and groundhogs. They typically use light bullets, such as 40-grain or 55-grain bullets, that travel at very high speeds.
  • ☑️ Small game loads: These loads are designed for taking down small game, such as rabbits and squirrels. They typically use bullets that are heavier than varmint loads, such as 60-grain or 70-grain bullets.
  • ☑️ Deer loads: These loads are designed for taking down deer. They typically use heavier bullets, such as 75-grain or 80-grain bullets, that have more stopping power.
  • ☑️ Long-range loads: These loads are designed for shooting at long ranges. They typically use very light bullets, such as 40-grain or 45-grain bullets, that travel at very high speeds.

In addition to these common types, there are also many specialized types:

  • ☑️ Lead-free loads: These loads are designed for hunters who want to reduce their environmental impact. They typically use bullets that are made of copper or brass.
  • ☑️ High-performance loads: These loads are designed for shooters who want the absolute best performance from their .22-250 rifles. They typically use very light bullets, such as 35-grain or 40-grain bullets, that travel at very high speeds.

The type of ammo that you choose will depend on the purpose for which you are using it. If you are varmint hunting, you will need to use a varmint load. If you are hunting deer, you will need to use a deer load. And if you are shooting at long ranges, you will need to use a long-range load.

Does 223 and 22 250 use the same bullet?

No, .223 Remington and .22-250 Remington cartridges do not use the same bullet. The .223 Remington uses a .224-inch diameter bullet, while the .22-250 Remington uses a .224-inch diameter bullet. The .223 Remington is a smaller cartridge than the .22-250 Remington, and it has a shorter case. The .223 Remington is also a higher-velocity cartridge than the .22-250 Remington.

Here is a table that summarizes the differences between the two cartridges:

Characteristic .223 Remington .22-250 Remington

Energy 1,200-1,300 foot-pounds 1,700-1,800 foot-pounds
Intended use Varmint hunting, target shooting Varmint hunting, small game hunting, deer hunting

It is important to note that using the wrong bullet in a cartridge can be dangerous. If you are not sure which bullet to use, it is always best to consult with a firearms expert.

How to store .22-250 ammo?

Here are some tips on how to store ammo:

  • 📎 Store ammo in a cool, dry place. Ammo should be stored in a cool, dry place to prevent it from corroding or degrading. The ideal temperature range for storing ammo is between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • 📎 Store ammo in a safe place. Ammo should be stored in a safe place where it is not accessible to children or unauthorized individuals. The safe should be locked and kept in a secure location.
  • 📎 Store ammo in its original packaging. The original packaging will help to protect the ammo from moisture and other environmental factors. If the original packaging is not available, store the ammo in a sturdy container that will protect it from damage.
  • 📎 Do not store ammo near magnets or other strong magnetic fields. Magnets can cause the firing pin to ignite the primer, which could result in an accidental discharge.
  • 📎 Inspect ammo regularly. Inspect ammo regularly for signs of damage, such as dents, cracks, or corrosion. If you see any damage, do not use the ammo.

Here are some additional tips:

  • 📎 Label your ammo containers. Label your ammo containers with the type of ammo, the date it was manufactured, and the date it was stored. This will help you to keep track of your ammo and to ensure that it is not expired.
  • 📎 Rotate your ammo stock. Rotate your ammo stock so that the oldest ammo is used first. This will help to ensure that your ammo is fresh and reliable.
  • 📎 Dispose of expired ammo properly. Expired ammo should be disposed of properly. Do not simply throw it away, as this could be dangerous. There are many resources available online that can help you to dispose of expired ammo properly.

By following these tips, you can help to ensure that your ammo is stored safely and properly.

Conclusion🤩

The .22-250 Remington represents a powerful and versatile ammunition choice, particularly popular among varmint hunters. With its high velocity, flat trajectory, and exceptional accuracy, it stands out among various calibres. Its diversity in terms of bullet types and weights further broadens its applicability to suit different shooting needs. However, factors such as faster barrel wear, higher cost, and potential overkill for smaller varmints are considerations to bear in mind. Like with any ammunition, careful evaluation of its features and trade-offs is essential to ensure it aligns with the shooter’s requirements and preferences.

The sole pairs of factory ammunition that had been used in my firearm were for the break-in process and to provide a small stockpile of brass. The performance of both the original Hornady 55 V-MAX’s (not the super performance variety) and the cost-effective white box Winchester ammunition left a positive impression. Specifically, the 45gr JHP’s, advertised with a speed of 4,000 fps, actually clocked in at 3,850 fps from my 24-inch, 1 in 12 Savage barrel. Furthermore, they demonstrated satisfactory accuracy.

Thank you for the post. I was looking for some information about this ammo. Last year, I managed to hunt two deer using this rifle. One of them fell quickly, covering merely 10-20 yards before it succumbed. Unfortunately, I couldn’t locate the other one. Back then, I was using fusion ammo, which despite providing good grouping, failed to impress me with its bullet construction. Consequently, I purchased a box of 60gr federal partitions after the incident of the lost deer. Despite my willingness to use these bullets, I was unable to achieve consistent grouping with them. My weapon of choice is an Icon Precision Hunter with a 22-inch barrel and a 1 in 14 twist. I am able to group 55gr bullets pretty effectively, but I haven’t found any 55gr partitions. If I don’t manage to buy a larger-caliber rifle by the next deer season, I urgently need to find a quality hunting bullet.

❌ No, .22-250 ammo is not recommended for larger game hunting. It lacks the necessary power and bullet weight to ethically and effectively take down bigger animals like deer or elk.

My Savage 22-250s have always favored the v-max, but recently I’ve made a switch to Federal factory-loaded Sierra Game Kings, weighing 55 grains. I noticed that I was getting a bit more of a “flop, drop, get up and run” scenario. These new rounds seem to have a more decisive impact—laying Them down more effectively. Plus, their shooting precision is excellent. As I’m planning to purchase my own reloading equipment, I’m considering testing heavier v-max bullets due to their exceptional accuracy which would be a shame to disregard altogether.

I’m expecting a Tikka 22-250 soon and I’m looking to accumulate a selection of ammunition to find out what works best. Could you Tikka users share your preferences in terms of accuracy and effectiveness for coyote hunting? Are there any types I should steer clear of? This is my inaugural centerfire rifle, so I’m still getting acquainted with the options. From my experience with the .22 and .17hmr, I’ve realized how crucial the rifle/ammunition combination is, although it can be a bit pricey to test. I’m primarily seeking a few reliable suggestions as a starting point. My Tikka T3 lite has a twist rate of 1:14 and a 22.4″ barrel length. Please note that I’m only interested in ammunition recommendations for the Tikka T3.

There’s a broad range of factory-produced options to choose from, but none are particularly superior for any specific rifle brand. My experience with two 14twist savages exemplifies this – one model handled 55s proficiently, while the other didn’t. In essence, a brand ‘z’ rifle may not necessarily prefer to load ‘x’ to load ‘y’. Given a 14 twist, the 55 gr bts are likely your upper limit. Should you require factory ammunition, I’d suggest considering either the Winchester white box 45 gr HP or the Hornady Superformance 50gr BT. In my experience, neither of these rounds disappoints in a 14-twist.
