FAQ ❓

How does the ballistics performance of .338 Win Mag compare to other popular rifle cartridges?

This ammo is typically loaded with 180-250 grain bullets and has a muzzle velocity of around 2,800-3,000 feet per second. This gives it excellent long-range performance, making it ideal for hunting large game animals such as elk, moose, and bears.

The .338 Win Mag has a higher muzzle velocity and muzzle energy than the .300 Win Mag and the .30-06 Springfield. This means that it can shoot a bullet further and with more force.

However, the .338 Win Mag also has more recoil than the .300 Win Mag and the .30-06 Springfield. This means that it can be more difficult to shoot accurately, especially for beginners.

Ultimately, the best cartridge for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for a cartridge with excellent long-range performance and can handle the recoil, then the .338 Win Mag is a good choice.

What is the difference between 338 Lapua vs 338 Win Mag?

.338 Lapua and .338 Winchester Magnum are both powerful rifle cartridges used for long-range shooting and hunting, but they have some notable differences in terms of performance, application, and design. Here’s a brief comparison:

⚪ Origin and History:

  • .338 Lapua: It was developed in the 1980s in Finland by Lapua. Originally designed for military and law enforcement purposes, it quickly gained popularity among long-range precision shooters and hunters due to its exceptional ballistics.
  • .338 Winchester Magnum: This cartridge has a longer history, dating back to 1958 when it was introduced by Winchester Repeating Arms Company. It was designed as a big-game hunting cartridge for North American game animals and has been widely used for hunting purposes.

⚪ Cartridge Dimensions:

  • The .338 Lapua Magnum has a larger case capacity and is longer in overall length. It typically uses a 0.338-inch (8.6 mm) diameter bullet and has a case length of 2.72 inches (69.20 mm).
  • The .338 Win Mag has a smaller case capacity and is shorter in overall length compared to the Lapua. It also uses a 0.338-inch (8.6 mm) diameter bullet but has a slightly shorter case length of 2.5 inches (63.5 mm).

⚪ Ballistic Performance:

  • The Lapua Magnum cartridge is known for its excellent long-range ballistics and high muzzle velocity. It can shoot heavier bullets at higher velocities, making it ideal for extreme long-range shooting and military sniper applications.
  •  The Win Mag is a powerful cartridge but falls short of the Lapua Magnum in terms of long-range performance. While it still offers excellent ballistic performance, it generally shoots lighter bullets at slightly lower velocities compared to the Lapua

The .338 Lapua Magnum is designed for extreme long-range shooting and has more powerful ballistics, while the .338 Winchester Magnum is a versatile hunting cartridge suitable for big-game hunting at moderate to long ranges. The choice between the two depends on the intended application, with the Lapua being favoured for precision shooting and the Win Mag being popular among hunters.

The .300 Win Mag has a smaller bore diameter than the .338 Win Mag, which means that it fires smaller and lighter bullets. This results in a flatter trajectory and less recoil with the .300 Win Mag. However, the .338 Win Mag has more muzzle energy and can take down larger game animals.

Here are some additional factors to consider when choosing:

  • Your shooting experience: If you are a beginner or intermediate shooter, then the .300 Win Mag may be a better choice. The recoil is milder, making it easier to shoot accurately.
  • The type of game you are hunting: If you are hunting large game animals, such as moose or bear, then the .338 Win Mag may be a better choice. The extra muzzle energy can help you take down these animals more effectively.
  • Your budget: .338 Win Mag ammo is typically more expensive than .300 Win Mag ammo. If you are on a budget, then the .300 Win Mag may be a better choice.

What bullet types are available for .338 Win Mag Ammo?

There are a variety of bullet types available, each with its own unique characteristics and intended use. Some of the most common bullet types include:

  • 📎 Full metal jacket (FMJ): FMJ bullets are the most basic type of bullet, and they are typically used for target shooting. They are made of a solid copper jacket that surrounds a lead core.
  • 📎 Soft point: Soft point bullets are designed to expand upon impact, creating a larger wound channel. This makes them ideal for hunting large game animals.
  • 📎 Hollow point: Hollow point bullets are also designed to expand upon impact, but they do so in a more controlled manner than soft point bullets. This makes them a good choice for self-defence, as they can minimize the risk of over-penetration.
  • 📎 Ballistic tip: Ballistic tip bullets are designed to improve the aerodynamics of the bullet, which can help to increase its range and accuracy.
  • 📎 Bonded: Bonded bullets are made of a copper jacket that is bonded to a lead core. This helps to prevent the core from separating from the jacket upon impact, which can improve the accuracy and terminal performance of the bullet.

The best bullet type for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are shooting for target practice, then FMJ bullets may be a good choice. If you are hunting large game animals, then soft point or hollow point bullets may be a better choice. If you are concerned about over-penetration, then hollow point bullets may be a better choice. If you are looking for the best possible accuracy and terminal performance, then bonded bullets may be a good choice.

It is important to note that the bullet type is not the only factor that affects the performance of a ground. Other factors such as the velocity, weight, and construction of the bullet can also affect its performance. It is important to consult with a ballistics expert to determine the best bullet type for your specific needs.

How much recoil can be expected when shooting .338 Win Mag Ammo?

The amount of recoil depends on a number of factors, including the weight of the rifle, the weight of the bullet, and the velocity of the bullet. In general, this ammo has a significant amount of recoil. A 225-grain bullet fired from a 9-pound rifle will have about 30.2 foot-pounds of recoil energy. This is about twice as much recoil as a 150-grain bullet fired from a 7-pound rifle.

The recoil can be mitigated by using a heavier rifle, a recoil pad, or a muzzle brake. However, even with these mitigations, the recoil can still be significant. If you are not used to shooting powerful rifles, then you may want to start with a lighter rifle and a lighter bullet. As you gain experience, you can then move up to a heavier rifle and a heavier bullet.

It is important to note that recoil can vary from person to person. Some people are more sensitive to recoil than others. If you are concerned about the recoil, then you should talk to a qualified gunsmith or shooting instructor.

Conclusion🤩

The .338 Winchester Magnum Ammo is a powerful and versatile round that shines in hunting, sport shooting, and even some tactical situations. Renowned for its long-range accuracy and substantial stopping power, it’s a preferred choice among seasoned shooters. Reloading can be a rewarding aspect of the shooting hobby, allowing for customization and potential cost savings. While its significant recoil may pose a challenge for beginners, mastering this round offers a unique and rewarding shooting experience.

I am in search of quality factory ammunition for my Savage 116, .338 Win Mag. I’m interested in bullets around the 225 or 250 grain weight. My experience with Remington has been less than satisfactory due to its inconsistent performance and the larger-than-preferred groups it forms out of my firearm. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations.

My Ruger 77 has performed exceptionally well with Remington ammunition. You might consider trying a package of Hornady or Feds, as they’ve been quite successful in my .308. If precision is your aim, you should look into ammunition reloading. It’s reasonably priced and you’ll find significant savings when reloading the 338WM.

In the past, when I relied on commercial ammunition, Federal Premium often delivered the highest accuracy for any firearm I used. However, its steep pricing led me down the path of producing my own ammunition. I discovered that not only was the self-manufactured ammo more precise, but it also allowed for customization based on my hunting needs and purposes. Additionally, it was significantly cheaper, reducing the costs by a third to half, allowing me to fire two to three times as many rounds for the same price. It’s all about perspective.

If the Federal Silver box Classic doesn’t give you the desired results, the Federal Premium can be a solid alternative. However, bear in mind that frequent usage can prove costly. Therefore, reloading your ammunition becomes more economical in the long run – don’t forget to keep all your spent casings!

Upon acquiring my 338, I initially purchased Federal Premium ammunition, specifically the 210gr. Nosler Partition and the 225gr. Nosler Accubond. Performance was impressive for both, but I encountered an unexpected issue when I commenced reloading my own ammunition. Despite my efforts, I found it challenging to replicate the same level of accuracy with the Accubonds as had been achieved with the factory loads.

My Ruger Hawkeye 338 has only ever been shot with hand-loaded ammunition; no factory-produced ammo has ever been used. With this setup, it effortlessly achieves sub-inch groupings at 100 yards using 225 gr. accubonds. From what I gather, no one seems to have any issues with their accuracy. Enjoy your shooting experience, tuning your Savage for accuracy should not present much of a challenge.
