Best Car Gun Holsters

What is a Car Gun Holster? 🔔

It also known as a vehicle gun holster or a car holster, is a device or system designed to securely hold a firearm inside a vehicle. It provides a convenient and easily accessible storage solution for individuals who need to carry a firearm while travelling in their vehicles.

Best Car Gun Holsters

Features 🏆

Firstly, they are designed to safely and discreetly store a handgun inside a vehicle. They attach to various parts of the interior, like under the seat, on the side of the centre console, or beneath the dashboard. ➡️ This allows the gun to be easily accessible by the driver or passenger but out of sight from anyone peering in through the windows.

Secondly, most of them are made out of durable materials like Kydex or Boltaron to protect the firearm from bumps and scratches. They mould to the specific gun model to hold it snugly in place while driving. Some holsters have a retention strap over the trigger guard for added security.

Moreover, quality items have a low profile, and slim design to fit conveniently in tight spaces without getting in the way. ➡️ For example, the underside of the driver’s seat often has the most room and allows you to sneakily access the holstered gun with your hand behind your back.

Finally, car holsters enable swift access to your firearm if needed for self-defence purposes. ➡️ The ability to quickly and covertly draw a pistol from under your seat or beside you gives you an advantage in a dangerous situation compared to having an unholstered gun out of reach in the trunk.  ⭕ However, safety should always be the top priority, so responsible gun owners should get proper training on weapon retention in vehicles.

How To Mount 🔐

✅ Step 1: Choose an Appropriate Mounting Location: Identify a suitable location in your vehicle where you want to mount the car holster. Common options include the dashboard, centre console, or under the steering wheel. Consider accessibility, comfort, and legal requirements when selecting the placement.

✅ Step 2: Prepare the Mounting Surface: Ensure the mounting surface is clean and free from any debris or dirt. Use a gentle cleaning solution or wipe to remove any dust or residue that may affect the adhesive or mounting process.

✅ Step 3: Position the Holster: Place the holster in the desired location, aligning it properly with the mounting surface. Ensure that it doesn’t obstruct any vital vehicle controls or impede the driver’s visibility.

✅ Step 4: Secure the Holster: Depending on the type of holster you have, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to secure it in place. This may involve using adhesive strips, screws, hooks, or other mounting mechanisms provided with the holster.

✅ Step 5: Adjust the Holster: Once the holster is securely mounted, make any necessary adjustments to ensure a snug fit for your firearm. Check the retention mechanism and straps, if applicable, to ensure they are properly adjusted to hold the firearm securely in place.

✅Step 6: Test and Verify Stability: Give the mounted holster a gentle tug or shake to ensure it is securely fastened and doesn’t move or shift excessively. If needed, make any additional adjustments or tighten the mounting mechanism for better stability.

✅ Step 7: Periodic Inspection: Regularly inspect the mounted car holster to ensure it remains securely attached and hasn’t loosened over time. Check for any signs of wear or damage, such as loose screws or weakened adhesive, and address them promptly.

✅Step 8: Cleaning and Maintenance: Follow the maintenance tips provided earlier to keep your car holster clean and in good working condition. Regularly clean the holster and the area surrounding it to prevent dust or debris buildup.

⭕ Remember, the specific mounting instructions may vary depending on the type and model of the car holster you have. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for detailed guidance tailored to your specific holster.

FAQ ❓

What is the best material for a car gun holster?

It goes without saying that the material needs to be rigid enough to hold the shape of the holster and keep the firearm securely in place. Kydex and Boltaron are two popular options that provide rigidity while still being thin and lightweight.

  • Kydex is a thermoplastic that can be custom-moulded to the exact shape of the gun.
  • Boltaron is a type of plastic that is resistant to high temperatures and chemical damage. Both maintain their sturdy structure to prevent unwanted movement of the weapon.

In addition, the material should have a smooth, slip-resistant surface to facilitate easy drawing of the weapon. Materials like leather or suede may feel nice but can catch on clothing or skin when pulling out the gun hurriedly in an emergency situation. Kydex and Boltaron again perform well here, providing a slick surface that won’t cling to the gun as it’s drawn.

Moreover, the material needs to be durable to withstand bumps and scratches inside the car over time. Kydex and Boltaron hold up well, but leather also has decent durability if properly cared for. Additionally, padding between the holster and the car interior helps prevent scuffs and damage on both surfaces. This padding can be made of soft felt or foam.

What is the maintenance?

Properly maintaining a car holster is important for both safety and performance. Here are some key maintenance tips:

🔰 Firstly, periodically inspect the holster for any signs of wear or damage. Things like cracks in the material or loose/broken mounting hardware can impair the holster’s ability to securely hold the firearm. 🟢 If any issues are found, stop using the holster until it can be repaired or replaced.

🔰 Secondly, clean the inside of the holster when it starts to accumulate dirt, dust, or other debris. Use a soft brush and wipe it out with a damp cloth. Avoid submerging leather holsters in water. ➡️ This keeps the holster lining smooth and removes anything that could scratch the firearm’s finish.

🔰 Moreover, for leather holsters, apply a leather conditioner regularly to keep the material flexible and conditioned. The cleaner helps hydrate and preserve the leather. 🟢 Follow the conditioner manufacturer’s application instructions.

🔰 Finally, confirm the holster retention and fit with the specific firearm you intend to carry. Drawing and re-holstering the unloaded gun, with proper ammunition precautions, ensures the moulding accommodates the exact model properly. 🟢 Adjustments can be made carefully with a heat gun if needed for a custom Kydex fit.

Where to Place the Car Holster?
Center Console: Mounting the car holster in the centre console allows for easy access and keeps the firearm within reach of the driver or front passenger. Under Steering Wheel: Mounting the holster beneath the steering wheel offers a discreet and easily accessible location. Make sure it doesn’t impede the driver’s leg movement or access to the pedals. Door Panel: Some car holsters can be mounted on the door panel for quick access. Ensure it doesn’t hinder the operation of the door or pose a safety risk during ingress or egress.
Dashboard: Placing the holster on the dashboard provides a visible and convenient location. However, ensure it doesn’t obstruct the driver’s view or interfere with the operation of the vehicle. Seat Mount: Attaching the holster to the side of the driver or passenger seat keeps the firearm within arm’s reach while seated. Ensure it doesn’t interfere with comfortable seating or seat adjustment. Seatback: Mounting the holster on the back of the front seats allows for concealed storage and easy access for rear-seat passengers. Ensure it doesn’t interfere with passenger comfort or legroom.
What should I do if I am stopped with a gun in my car?

Being stopped by law enforcement with a firearm in your vehicle can be a tense situation if not handled properly. Here are some tips if it happens to you:

  • ⚫ Remain calm and keep your hands visible on the steering wheel at all times. Avoid any sudden movements that could alarm the officer.
  • ⚫ When the officer approaches, disclose that you have a legally owned gun in the car and where it is located. Be transparent and let them know you will fully comply with their instructions.
  • ⚫ Follow the officer’s commands exactly. Ask for permission before reaching for your wallet, registration, etc.
If asked to step out of the car, move slowly and keep your hands up. The officer may decide to secure the weapon for safety.
  • ⚫ Do not attempt to touch or reach for the gun yourself at any point, even if unloaded. Let the officer handle it. If the gun is in a locked case or compartment, point that out and ask the officer how they would like you to retrieve it once given permission.
  • ⚫ Have your concealed carry permit and firearm registration paperwork accessible in case it is requested. But do not reach for it without the officer’s go-ahead.
  • ⚫ Answer all questions clearly and provide any details that may help reassure the officer of the legality of your gun possession.
If issued a ticket or citation, resolve it through proper legal channels later. Arguing will not help at the scene.

Staying calm, communicating clearly, and following instructions explicitly gives the best chance of de-escalating the situation and resolving it without incident. Safety should be the top priority for all parties involved.

What is the difference between a holster and a safe for your car?

A holster is primarily designed for carrying and providing quick access to a firearm while on your person or within immediate reach. It securely holds the firearm on your body or in close proximity, typically on a belt, inside the waistband, or attached to a vehicle. Holsters prioritize accessibility, allowing for rapid deployment of the firearm when needed.

On the other hand,  a safe for your car is designed to securely store firearms and other valuables inside a locked container. Car safes prioritize security and protection by preventing unauthorized access and theft. They are often constructed from durable materials, have locking mechanisms (e.g., combination locks, electronic locks), and may offer additional features like tamper alerts or tethering options. Car safes provide a higher level of physical security for the stored items.

Conclusion 🔊

Car gun holsters are valuable accessories for individuals who choose to carry firearms in their vehicles. They provide a secure and accessible means of storing a firearm while on the go. By choosing the right holster type, material, and mounting position, individuals can enhance their personal safety and preparedness. Remember, responsible firearm ownership and adherence to local laws should always be a priority. It is crucial to maintain a respectful and cooperative attitude when interacting with law enforcement and to comply with their instructions. By following these guidelines and prioritizing safety, individuals can make informed decisions and effectively utilize car holsters to enhance their personal protection while on the road.

I only use my car holster during long trips that take more than an hour. I don’t use it when driving around town, as I keep my gun on me during those trips. I use the car holster only occasionally and mainly for comfort.

💡 Car gun holsters are designed to provide quick and efficient access to your firearm. However, the ease and speed of drawing depend on factors such as holster design, positioning, and personal practice. Regular training and familiarization with your chosen holster are crucial to developing a smooth and efficient draw technique.

To add some humor, I want to clarify that my truck is too large and heavy to carry like a handgun in a holster on my hip. 😄 However, I’ve considered attaching a holster somewhere in my truck for my gun while driving. Ultimately, I feel more comfortable having my gun holstered on my hip and uncovered for a quick and easy draw if necessary.

I always carry my weapon with me when I am in my car or driving. However, I have a Hornaday lock box that I attached mechanically under my seat. I put my gun in it when I visit a store that doesn’t allow carrying concealed weapons. When I use this box, it remains completely hidden from sight to avoid drawing attention to the fact that I may have a gun in my car.

I don’t use a holster to carry my gun. Carrying it in the appendix position doesn’t work for me either, because sitting becomes uncomfortable. However, I do keep a safe mounted under my seat for the times when I have to leave my gun in the truck.

In Florida, it’s illegal to open carry, even if you have a concealed weapons license, and this applies even if you’re in your car. If your holster or magnet mount makes the firearm visible from outside the car, it’s still a violation. However, if you don’t have a concealed weapons license, you can legally have a concealed firearm in your car, as long as it’s not easily accessible as if you were carrying it on your person. If you’re planning to mount a holster, it’s important to check the laws of your state regarding where you can carry firearms. For example, in some states, it’s legal to store firearms in places like the area between your car seat and console or a door pocket.

I have a holster mount from Alien Gear that is positioned under the dash, just to the side and above my right knee. The mount is offset from the steering wheel. I use my Alien Gear Cloak Tuck OWB paddle holster with the mount, which securely holds my gun while making sure the trigger is completely covered. Even if you look into the car from outside, you won’t be able to see it easily. It also allows for a quick draw, faster than if it were on my hip. Of course, I only leave the gun in the mount while I am in the vehicle, but it comes in handy while driving for long distances.
