A 22 short has a muzzle velocity of around 750 feet per second and muzzle energy of around 70 foot-pounds.

For comparison, a 9mm Luger cartridge has a muzzle velocity of around 1,300 feet per second and muzzle energy of over 400-foot pounds. So the 22 short is much less powerful than the 9mm Luger cartridge. It would be reasonable to assume that the effective range of a 22 short would be significantly less than the effective range of the 9mm Luger cartridge.

The .22LR is a rimfire cartridge with a bullet weight of 40 grains and a muzzle velocity of 1,085 feet per second.

What is the effective range of a 22 short?

It has a muzzle energy of 128-foot pounds and a ballistic coefficient of 0.089. According to Federal Cartridge Company’s website, “The .22 LR offers the smallest average group sizes when fired from handguns compared to any other rimfire or centerfire cartridge.” Its effective range is about 75-100 yards depending on the shooter’s ability, among other factors.

A 22 short has an effective range of about 50 yards. The bullet will start to lose velocity and accuracy beyond that distance, so it’s not recommended to shoot targets any further away than that.

For small games, such as rabbits or squirrels, the 22 short is a great choice because its limited power won’t tear the animal apart.

For larger games, such as deer, you’ll need something more powerful like a 357 Magnum.

A 22 short cartridge has a muzzle velocity of 755 feet per second (fps) and muzzle energy of 65-foot pounds. For comparison, a standard velocity 22-long rifle cartridge has a muzzle velocity of 1,080 fps and muzzle energy of 128-foot pounds. So the 22 short is significantly less powerful than the 22 long rifle cartridge. The effective range of a 22 short is 75 yards. Beyond that distance, the bullet will lose too much power to be effective.

What is the effective range of a 22 short?

A 22 short has an effective range of around 100 yards. Beyond that, the ballistics of the round start to drop off significantly, making it difficult to hit a target. For comparison, a full-sized rifle round like a .308 (best 308 ammo) can have an effective range of up to 800 yards.

The effective range of a 22 short is about 50 yards. Beyond that, you might not be able to hit your target.
