Benefits 😎

To start with, a recoil pad will significantly reduce felt recoil when shooting. By absorbing and dissipating recoil energy, the pad helps prevent the “kick” from impacting your shoulder so sharply. ↪️ This reduction in recoil allows you to shoot the 870 for longer periods without discomfort and fatigue setting in.

Next, recoil pads greatly minimize the potential for bruising on your shoulder from the 870’s recoil. The soft rubber or gel material acts as a buffer that protects your shoulder from hammering by the steel butt plate when firing. ↪️ This makes shooting less painful and prevents ugly bruises from developing.

Moreover, a recoil pad enhances your shooting comfort and improves the retention of good form. The reduced recoil helps you resist flinching, allowing you to focus on maintaining proper stance and technique for more accurate shooting. ↪️ It also lets you use the 870 for fun recreational shooting without dreading the bruising recoil.

Finally, a quality recoil pad will protect the buttstock itself from wear and tear. The pad bears the brunt of repeated recoil impact rather than the wood or composite stock material. ↪️ This preserves the condition and extends the service life of your 870’s stock.

Installation 🛠️

🛑 First and foremost, always check that your shotgun is unloaded and pointed in a safe direction. Ensure the chamber, feed mechanism and magazine are completely empty before beginning any work.

🔘 Start by removing the existing recoil pad or butt plate. This usually involves unscrewing the recoil pad or using a hammer and punch to drive out the pins securing the butt plate to the stock. Be careful not to damage the stock itself during removal.

🔘 Once the old pad or plate is removed, thoroughly clean the end of the stock using acetone or sandpaper. This removes any old adhesive, grease or dirt so the new pad can adhere properly. Degrease and roughen the mating surfaces for the best bond.

🔘 Next, test fit your new recoil pad and make any adjustments needed for proper fit. Use sandpaper to remove any material interfering with smooth contact between the pad and stock. For replacement pads, you may need to inlet the stock using rasps and files so the new pad fits seamlessly.

🔘 Follow the adhesive instructions for your new pad. This usually involves applying the supplied recoil pad adhesive uniformly across the roughened stock end as well as on the new pad’s interior surface. Avoid over-application of adhesive.

🔘 Once the adhesive is ready, clamp the recoil pad into place firmly against the stock. Use a padded clamp or vice to apply even pressure as the adhesive sets. Avoid shifting or skewing the pad. Check alignment using a straight edge.

⚠️ Allow the adhesive to fully cure as directed, usually at least 24 hours. Do not rush this curing time before firing your shotgun or the pad may detach from recoil. Test the pad by hand to ensure it is completely adhered to.

*️⃣ Reinstall any accessories like slings, cheek risers and foam using the screw holes on your new pad. Finally, safely test fire your shotgun to ensure proper fit and function before regular use with the new recoil pad.

FAQ ❓

How do I clean and maintain my recoil pad?

🟡 Be sure to clean the pad regularly using only a mild soap and water solution applied with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could degrade the pad over time. Always thoroughly dry the pad after cleaning, either with a clean towel or allowing ample air dry time, as trapped moisture inside the pad can cause damage.

🟡 When cleaning, closely inspect the pad for any cracks, missing chunks, or excessive flattening, which are signs a replacement is needed. Quality pads should remain resilient for many rounds before replacement is required. Verify the pad remains securely adhered to the stock. If you notice it becoming loose, use adhesive remover pads or additional epoxy to re-secure it, as a loose pad severely hinders recoil absorption.

*️⃣ For slip-on pads use straps, check the straps are in good shape keeping the pad firmly in place. Frayed or broken straps must be replaced. If the pad surface becomes sticky, lightly coat it with talcum powder to prevent grabbing clothing during mounting. Avoid exposing the pad to oils, gasoline and chemicals that can degrade the material.

🛑 The most important maintenance step is to replace the pad immediately if cracks, splits or other defects are noticed, as these will hamper its recoil-dampening ability. Use only manufacturer-recommended replacement pads for proper performance.

How Do I Choose the Correct Recoil Pad for Remington 870?

Choosing the correct recoil pad for your Remington 870 involves several crucial steps. Firstly, you must consider the pad’s material. The optimal recoil pad is usually made of soft rubber or gel material, which is known for its excellent shock-absorbing properties. This material effectively dissipates recoil energy, reducing the impact on the shooter’s shoulder and resulting in a more comfortable shooting experience.

Secondly, the fit of the recoil pad is vital. It is essential to select a recoil pad that is perfectly compatible with your Remington 870 shotgun. This ensures that the pad fits seamlessly and securely, contributing to better stability and accuracy when shooting.

Moreover, taking into account quality and longevity is important. A high-quality recoil pad, made from durable materials, is resistant to frequent use and wear, maintaining its effectiveness over time. It is wise to invest in a recoil pad that offers both superior performance and durability, ensuring it will last for many shooting sessions to come.

Finally, ease of installation is another factor to consider when selecting a recoil pad for your Remington 870. A recoil pad that is easy to install and remove adds to its practicality and convenience. It allows you to quickly adjust to different shooting conditions, making it an indispensable addition to your shooting kit.

Can I customize my pad with optics or a side saddle?

There are many options for customizing your Remington 870 pad with extra accessories and shooting aids. Rather than having to mount accessories separately, many pads allow direct integration for a streamlined setup.

💠 Some pads come pre-drilled with screw holes so optics like red dot sights and scopes can be mounted directly to the pad. This enables adding a sight without drilling into the shotgun’s receiver.

💠  Other pads feature M-LOK, KeyMod, or Picatinny rails moulded into the pad itself. These rails allow seamless mounting of accessories like flashlights, lasers, or shell holders right on the stock.

💠 Side saddle shell holders are another popular accessory that can attach directly to compatible recoil pads, utilizing the pad’s sling swivel stud for ammo carriage. For tunability, cheek risers and adjustable combs can be added to pads to customize and raise comb height as needed for proper sight alignment and shooting form.

💠 Extra sling swivel studs are also found on some pads for flexibility in sling attachment points. When shopping for an 870 recoil pad, look for one with integrated mounting options to streamline adding accessories without separate rails or assemblies. This allows customizing your 870’s capabilities while saving costs over purchasing individual accessories.

Are Remington 870 recoil pads universal or model-specific?

They can be both universal and model-specific, depending on the manufacturer and the type of recoil pad you are considering. Some aftermarket recoil pads are designed to fit a wide range of shotguns, including Remington 870 models. These universal pads often come with a template or instructions for trimming or fitting them to your specific shotgun. They offer versatility but may require some customization to achieve a perfect fit.

On the other hand, certain recoil pads are specifically designed and manufactured for particular shotgun models, such as the Remington 870. These model-specific pads are typically pre-fit to match the dimensions and contours of the stock on the designated shotgun. They may offer a more seamless and convenient installation.

⚠️ When shopping for a recoil pad for your Remington 870, it’s essential to check the product description and compatibility information to determine whether it’s designed as a universal fit or made specifically for your shotgun model.

Should I get a slip-on or replacement pad?

When choosing a recoil pad for your Remington 870, there are pros and cons to consider between slip-on pads and replacement pads:

Slip-on pads:

  • ✅ Quick and easy to install without modifications to the stock.
  • ✅ Many use straps or adhesive so no permanent alterations.
  • ✅ Good budget-friendly option.
  • ❌ May have a looser, sloppier fit compared to factory replacement pads.
  • ❌ Adhesives could possibly come loose over time.

Replacement pads:

  • ✅ Engineered to integrate directly into the buttstock for a seamless factory-like fit.
  • ✅ Often provide more recoil dampening due to design.
  • ✅ Permanent solution when epoxied.
  • ❌ Require completely removing the original buttstock which is more work.
  • ❌ Necessary to refinish and reinstall accessories.

For a quick and affordable recoil pad solution, slip-ons offer convenience and can be installed in minutes. But for a professional permanent fit with maximum recoil mitigation, a full replacement pad integrated into the stock is recommended.

Consider how much work you are willing to do, fit, cost, recoil reduction needed, and long-term plans when deciding between options. Both can significantly tame the 870’s stout kick though replacement pads tend to outperform slip-ons overall in terms of recoil dampening.

Conclusion 🤩

The Remington 870 Recoil Pad is an invaluable accessory that significantly enhances the shooting experience for any user of the Remington 870 shotgun. By mitigating recoil, preventing bruising, and promoting better shooting form, it provides a more comfortable and precise shooting experience. Moreover, its protective role in preserving the condition of the shotgun’s stock adds to its practical value.

Whether you are a professional shooter or a recreational user, investing in a quality recoil pad will undoubtedly improve your overall performance and enjoyment of the shooting sport.

Hi! Do I need any special tools to install a recoil pad on my Remington 870?

I’ve noticed that there’s a wide range of great aftermarket recoil pad options on the market, but when it comes to getting the perfect fit, I’ve found that having a professional install an oversized or grindable pad is unbeatable. In my experience, it not only saves money but also significantly reduces the time and frustration typically associated with attempting DIY installations.

Hey folks, I recently swapped out the recoil pad on my Remington 870 with a LimbSaver AirTech pad, but I’ve been having issues with it coming loose after a few rounds. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I had a similar issue with my pad. It kept shifting around, and it was really frustrating. I ended up using some heavy-duty adhesive to keep it in place, which worked, but it’s definitely not an ideal solution.

+1((((( It seemed like no matter how tightly I secured it, it would start to slip after a few shots. I eventually switched to a different pad, and that solved the issue.
