Best Leather Glock 19 Holster

What is a leather Glock 19 holster? 🤔

It is a type of firearm accessory designed specifically to hold and secure a Glock 19 pistol. They are often chosen for their ability to mold to the shape of the pistol over time, providing a snug fit and secure retention. Such holsters can be worn on the belt, inside the waistband (IWB), outside the waistband (OWB), or in other positions depending on the design and user’s preference.

Features 📚

The features of a leather Glock 19 holster can vary depending on the specific design and manufacturer, but here are some common features you might find in such holsters:

  • ❇️ Retention: A good holster should have proper retention mechanisms to securely hold the Glock 19 in place. This can include features like thumb breaks, snap straps, or molded retention devices.
  • ❇️ Molded Fit: They can be molded to the shape of the Glock 19 over time, providing a secure and snug fit. This helps prevent the pistol from moving around or falling out accidentally.
  • ❇️ Belt Attachment: Many holsters are designed to attach to a belt, either through belt loops or clips. The attachment should be secure to prevent the holster from coming loose during movement.
  • ❇️ Draw Angle: Its design should allow for a smooth and natural drawing of the Glock 19. This could involve a slight forward or rearward cant to facilitate a quick and efficient draw.
  • ❇️ Finish and Appearance: These holsters often have a classic and aesthetically pleasing look that can complement the firearm and the user’s attire.

How to break in a leather holster? 🤠

Breaking in a leather holster is a process that helps the holster conform to the shape of your firearm, making it more comfortable to wear and ensuring a smoother draw. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do this:

➡️ Before starting the break-in process, carefully inspect the holster for any defects, loose stitching, or irregularities. It’s best to address any issues before proceeding. Ensure your Glock 19 is unloaded and the chamber is clear. Safety is paramount throughout this process.
➡️ Start by wearing the holster around the house for short periods. This helps the leather begin to mold to your body’s contours and the shape of the firearm.
➡️ Gently insert and remove your Glock from the holster multiple times. This helps the leather stretch and shape itself around the firearm. Be patient and avoid forcing the firearm into the holster if it doesn’t easily slide in at first.
➡️ Some firearm enthusiasts recommend using a very small amount of leather-safe lubricant or conditioner on the inside of the holster. This can help expedite the molding process and reduce friction.
➡️ You can leave your unloaded Glock 19 in the holster overnight to help the leather conform to the firearm’s shape. Be cautious not to leave it holstered for extended periods, as it might cause excessive stretching or deformation.
➡️ Regularly check the fit of your Glock in the holster. Over time, you should notice that the holster becomes more accommodating to the firearm’s shape.

📌 Remember that breaking in a leather holster takes time and patience. Rushing the process could potentially damage the holster or affect its functionality. Regular use and proper care will help you achieve a well-fitting and comfortable holster over time.

Reasons to pick a leather holster over Kydex 📢

Choosing between a leather holster and a Kydex holster depends on your personal preferences, needs, and priorities. Both materials have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. Here are some reasons:

☑️ Comfort:  Leather holsters tend to be more comfortable as they conform to your body’s contours over time. This can help prevent discomfort during extended periods of wear.
☑️ Moldable Fit: They gradually mold to the shape of your firearm, offering a custom fit. This can improve retention and the smoothness of your draw over time.
☑️ Noise Reduction: Leather is quieter than Kydex, which can be advantageous in situations where noise discipline is important, such as hunting or tactical scenarios.
☑️ Temperature Regulation:  Leather is a breathable material that can help regulate temperature, preventing excessive heat or cold from transferring to your firearm.
☑️ Protection of Firearm Finish:  Such holsters are generally less abrasive than Kydex, potentially reducing wear on your firearm’s finish over time.
☑️ Stealth: They can have less audible or tactile “clicking” when reholstering compared to Kydex, which can be useful in situations where minimizing noise is crucial.
☑️ Classic Appeal: If you appreciate the heritage and history of firearms, using a leather holster can enhance the traditional experience.
☑️ Easier on Clothing: Holsters tend to be gentler on clothing fabrics, reducing wear and tear over time.
☑️ Low-Profile Look: These holsters can often provide effective concealment with a more low-profile appearance, especially when well-fit to your body.

🚨 However, it’s important to consider the potential drawbacks of leather holsters as well:

🔶 Maintenance: Leather holsters require regular maintenance to prevent drying out, cracking, or becoming overly stretched. They can also be more susceptible to moisture and humidity.

🔶 Break-In Period: These holsters often require a break-in period to achieve optimal fit and comfort, whereas Kydex holsters are typically ready to use immediately.

❗ Ultimately, the choice between a leather holster and a Kydex holster comes down to your personal preferences, how you plan to use the holster, and your comfort level. It’s important to thoroughly research and consider your priorities before making a decision.

How is it made?

✍️ Making a leather holster involves several steps that transform raw leather into a functional and aesthetically pleasing accessory for carrying firearms. Here’s a general overview of the process:

  • 🔷 Material Selection: High-quality leather is chosen for its durability, appearance, and suitability for holster making. Different types of leather can be used, each with its characteristics and benefits.
  • 🔷 Pattern Design: A pattern is created based on the firearm model the holster is intended for. This pattern serves as a guide for cutting and assembling the leather pieces.
  • 🔷 Cutting Leather: The leather is cut into the required shapes using the pattern as a template. Various sections will be cut, including the main holster body, retention strap (if applicable), and any additional features.
  • 🔷 Stitching: Depending on the design, stitching might be required to hold the holster’s components together. This is often done using heavy-duty thread and specialized sewing machines or hand-stitching techniques.
  • 🔷 Molding and Shaping: The leather pieces are molded and shaped to provide a proper fit for the firearm. This might involve wetting the leather, forming it around the gun, and allowing it to dry while maintaining the desired shape.
  • 🔷 Retention Adjustments: If the holster has retention features, such as straps or thumb breaks, these are integrated into the design. These mechanisms are crucial for securely holding the firearm in place.
  • 🔷 Edging and Burnishing: The edges of the leather are smoothed, beveled, and burnished to create a polished look and prevent fraying. This process also enhances the overall appearance and comfort of the holster.
  • 🔷 Dyeing and Finishing: The leather can be dyed to achieve the desired color. After dyeing, a finish or protective coating might be applied to enhance the leather’s longevity and appearance.
  • 🔷 Lining (Optional): Some holsters might include a lining made of soft leather or a synthetic material. This lining helps protect the firearm’s finish and provides additional retention.
  • 🔷 Hardware Installation: Belt loops, clips, or other hardware components are attached to the holster. These allow the holster to be secured to a belt or clothing.
  • 🔷 Final Fitting and Adjustments: The holster is checked for proper fit and function with the intended firearm. Adjustments might be made at this stage to ensure optimal retention and accessibility.
  • 🔷 Final Quality Check: The finished holster is carefully inspected for any defects, loose stitching, or imperfections that need correction before it is packaged and shipped.

📌 It’s important to note that the exact process can vary based on the manufacturer, the type of leather being used, and the specific design of the holster. Craftsmanship, attention to detail, and skill are essential factors in creating a high-quality leather holster.

What's the best leather for holsters?

✒️ The choice of leather for holsters depends on factors such as durability, comfort, appearance, and suitability for the intended use. Different types of leather offer varying characteristics that can make them well-suited for holster making. Some commonly used leathers for holsters include:

  • 💣 Full-grain leather is considered the highest quality leather and is often preferred for holsters. It’s made from the top layer of the hide and retains its natural grain pattern, providing excellent durability, strength, and resistance to wear. Full-grain leather can develop a rich patina over time, enhancing its appearance.
  • 💣 Top-grain leather is also a popular choice for holsters. It’s slightly less rugged than full-grain leather but still offers good durability and a smooth surface. Top-grain leather is often used for its ability to take dye and finish well, resulting in a polished appearance.
  • 💣 Horween leather, specifically Chromexcel, and vegetable-tanned leather is known for its high quality and rich character. Chromexcel leather has a unique blend of waxes and oils that give it a rich, pull-up effect, making it well-suited for holster making. Vegetable-tanned leather is known for its ability to mold and patina beautifully over time.
  • 💣 Hermann Oak leather is a type of vegetable-tanned leather that’s widely regarded for its quality. It’s often used in premium holsters due to its natural appearance, excellent molding characteristics, and ability to age gracefully.
  • 💣 Cowhide leather is commonly used for holsters due to its durability and availability. It can be tanned in various ways to achieve different characteristics, from rugged to more refined.
  • 💣 Some holsters are made from exotic leathers like alligator, ostrich, or sharkkin. These leathers can offer unique textures and patterns, but they tend to be more expensive and might require specialized care.

How to choose a leather holster?

🔍 Choosing the right leather holster for your firearm involves considering various factors to ensure that you get a comfortable, secure, and reliable carrying solution. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you choose a suitable one:

  • ✔️ Know Your Firearm: Understand the specifications and dimensions of your firearm, including the make and model. Different holsters are designed to fit specific firearms, so knowing your gun’s size is crucial.
  • ✔️ Determine Your Carry Style: Decide how you want to carry your firearm. Common carry styles include inside-the-waistband (IWB), outside-the-waistband (OWB), shoulder, ankle, and pocket carry. Choose a holster style that aligns with your preferences and needs.
  • ✔️ Consider Retention: Evaluate the holster’s retention features. The holster should securely hold the firearm in place, preventing it from falling out while allowing for a smooth draw. Look for adjustable retention mechanisms if possible.
  • ✔️ Choose Right- or Left-Handed: Ensure that you choose a holster designed for your dominant hand. Holsters are typically available in both right-handed and left-handed versions.
  • ✔️ Quality of Leather: Look for holsters made from high-quality leather such as full-grain or top-grain leather. Quality leather provides durability, comfort, and a good balance between strength and flexibility.
  • ✔️ Comfort and Fit: Choose a holster that is comfortable to wear for extended periods. The holster should mold to your body over time, and the fit should be snug without being too tight or too loose.
  • ✔️ Holster Position: Consider where you want to carry your firearm. Different positions might require specific holster designs. For example, IWB holsters are designed for concealed carry and fit inside the waistband.
  • ✔️ Retention Mechanisms: If you prefer added security, consider holsters with retention features like thumb breaks, straps, or snaps. Ensure that these mechanisms are easy to use and don’t hinder your draw speed.
  • ✔️ Holster Cant: The cant refers to the angle at which the holster is positioned. Some holsters offer adjustable cant, allowing you to adjust the angle for a more natural draw.
  • ✔️ Concealment: If you intend to carry your firearm concealed, choose a holster that provides effective concealment. IWB holsters, for example, are generally better for concealed carry.
  • ✔️ Reputation of the Manufacturer: Research and choose a reputable holster manufacturer known for quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. Read reviews and seek recommendations from fellow firearm owners.
  • ✔️ Compatibility with Accessories: If you plan to use accessories like weapon lights or red dot sights on your firearm, ensure that the holster accommodates these modifications.
  • ✔️ Price and Budget: Leather holsters vary in price based on quality, features, and brand. Set a budget and choose a holster that meets your needs without compromising on quality and safety.
  • ✔️ Try Before You Buy: If possible, try the holster before purchasing. Some gun stores might allow you to test the holster with your firearm to ensure a proper fit and comfort.

How long do these holsters last?

⏰ The lifespan of a leather holster can vary widely based on factors such as the quality of the leather, the frequency of use, the level of care and maintenance, and the environmental conditions to which the holster is exposed. Generally, a well-made leather holster can last anywhere from a few years to several decades. Here are some considerations that can affect the lifespan:

  • Quality of Leather: High-quality leather, such as full-grain or top-grain leather, is more durable and can withstand wear and tear better than lower-grade leather.
  • Frequency of Use: Holsters that are used frequently will experience more wear. If you carry your firearm daily, the holster might wear out faster compared to occasional use.
  • Maintenance: Proper care and maintenance can significantly extend the life of a leather holster. Regularly cleaning the holster, applying leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking, and storing it in a cool, dry place can all contribute to longevity.
  • Environmental Conditions: Exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, moisture, and sunlight can affect the leather’s integrity. Storing the holster in a controlled environment can help preserve it.
  • Wetness and Sweat: Prolonged exposure to moisture, sweat, and body oils can accelerate leather deterioration. Consider using a moisture barrier or protective sleeve if you anticipate exposure to these elements.
  • Stress Points: Certain areas of the holster, like stitching and stress points, can experience more wear. Inspect these areas regularly for signs of damage.
  • Design and Craftsmanship: A well-crafted holster with reinforced stitching and careful construction is likely to last longer than a poorly made one.
  • Firearm Fit: Holsters that are overly tight can stress the leather and cause it to wear faster. A holster with a proper fit for your firearm is less likely to experience premature deterioration.
  • Personal Care: How you handle your holster matters. Avoid unnecessary twisting or bending, and ensure that you don’t overstretch the leather during the initial break-in process.
  • Patina and Aging: Over time, leather holsters can develop a patina, which is a natural discoloration and aging of the leather. While this can enhance the character of the holster, it doesn’t necessarily indicate reduced functionality.

❗ Given these factors, it’s important to understand that a leather holster is a consumable item that will eventually show signs of wear and aging, especially with regular use. With proper care and maintenance, you can prolong the life of your holster and enjoy its functionality and appearance for many years.

What is the best way to care for it?

👍 Proper care and maintenance are essential to extend the life of your leather holster and ensure its functionality and appearance over time. Here are some steps you can take to care for your leather holster:

  • 💧 Regular Cleaning: Wipe down the holster regularly with a slightly damp, clean cloth to remove dirt, dust, and debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or excessive water, as they can damage the leather.
  • 💧 Dry Thoroughly: If your holster gets wet, allow it to air dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid using heat sources like hairdryers or radiators, as they can cause the leather to shrink or crack.
  • 💧 Leather Conditioning: Apply a leather conditioner periodically to keep the leather supple and prevent it from drying out or cracking. Use a conditioner recommended for your specific type of leather.
  • 💧 Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the leather to fade and become brittle. Store your holster in a cool, dry place away from sunlight when not in use.
  • 💧 Store Properly: When not using the holster, store it in a holster pouch, a protective sleeve, or a holster box to prevent dust accumulation and exposure to the elements.
  • 💧 Moisture Prevention: If you anticipate exposure to moisture, consider using a moisture barrier or protective sleeve to shield the holster from sweat or rain.
  • 💧 Rotate Usage: If you have multiple holsters, rotate their usage to distribute wear evenly across them. This can help prolong the lifespan of each holster.
  • 💧 Avoid Overstretching: During the break-in process, avoid overstretching the leather by forcing the firearm into the holster. This can cause premature wear and distortion.
  • 💧 Inspect Regularly: Periodically inspect the holster for signs of damage, loose stitching, or wear at stress points. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage.
  • 💧 Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Avoid using harsh cleaning chemicals or solvents on your holster, as they can damage the leather’s finish and integrity.
  • 💧 Lubrication: Occasionally apply a small amount of leather-safe lubricant to the inside of the holster to aid in holstering and drawing your firearm.
  • 💧 Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Leather can be sensitive to extreme temperatures. Avoid leaving your holster in very hot or very cold environments for extended periods.
  • 💧 Gentle Brushing: If there’s dirt or debris stuck in the stitching or crevices of the holster, use a soft-bristle brush to gently remove it.
  • 💧 Avoid Overexposure to Sweat: If you carry your holster against your skin, consider using an undershirt or barrier to prevent direct contact with sweat, which can accelerate leather deterioration.

📌 Remember that caring for a leather holster is an ongoing process. Regular maintenance and attention to detail can significantly extend the life of your holster and ensure it remains both functional and aesthetically appealing.

Are any of you using an all-leather holster? I’m currently looking for a new OWB holster, and while there are countless Kydex options available from numerous manufacturers, I’m curious if a leather rig might be the more comfortable option. Would anyone be willing to share their personal experience with this?

Leather holsters and hybrids offer me a higher level of comfort. Over the years, I’ve tested quite a range of holsters, and my go-to is currently the Gould & Goodrich Three-Slot Pancake Concealment Holster. For times when I’m not using light and I’m looking for that all-leather or hybrid feel, I frequently switch to it as my daily carry option. In my view, holsters are a bit like shoes – having more options and variety available day-to-day improves the overall experience.

I prefer using leather holsters, and I’ve stuck with them for years. The comfort they offer is a big reason, but there’s more to it. Leather holsters provide a unique advantage – they’re much more forgiving if you’re injured or find yourself in a situation where you can’t achieve the best draw angle. With leather, you can adjust the gun’s position by using your off-hand to twist it out of the holster. This level of forgiveness isn’t as readily found with Kydex holsters. When it comes to specific options, I’ve found that the Galco Inside The Pant Waistband Holster is among the top choices for comfortable IWB leather carry. It’s worth considering if you’re looking for a reliable solution.

I’m excited to share that I’ve recently purchased my very first pistol, a Glock 19! As a newcomer to firearms, I’m in the process of looking for the right IWB holster. I’ve been doing a lot of research, but I’m still unsure about what would be the best fit for my needs. This is all quite new to me, so any guidance or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Holsters are one of those things that you need to try out to see if they’ll work for you. It’s such a personal preference and everyone’s needs are different. I can tell you that, after experimenting with various holsters, my top pick is the CrossBreed Holsters SuperTuck IWB Holster.

I’ve been using the Galco Kingtuk IWB Holster for my Glock 19 for around 6 to 8 months, and I must say, it’s a fantastic holster given its price. Try it!

I’ve been using the Concealment Express Hybrid Holster, and I have to say, it’s an excellent choice. Its design is focused on achieving great concealment while allowing an angle adjustment for the gun. This helps prevent printing and ensures better contact with your body. One major advantage is its versatility – it can be worn in various positions, allowing you to find the best carry position while still ensuring optimal concealment.

As a newcomer to the firearm world, I thought it would be best to seek advice from experienced individuals. I’m currently looking to invest in a high-quality, long-lasting holster for my MR 920. However, I’m pretty clueless when it comes to choosing the right brand or maker. Right now, I’m leaning toward an OWB holster, although I’m not entirely sure why. I’d appreciate any counterpoints or suggestions on this.

To begin with, you need to figure out my carrying style – whether it’s going for OWB or IWB. And if it’s IWB, then consider the position, like 4 o’clock or appendix. I’m a bit of a holster enthusiast, I have quite a collection. Leather holsters are great but require some breaking in. They also need more maintenance, and on rare occasions, they can bend in a way that might interfere with the trigger and potentially lead to an accidental discharge. On the other hand, Kydex holsters have no break-in period but might not be as comfortable. The polymer holsters can scuff the gun’s finish, especially if dirt or sand gets caught while holstering. Hybrids combine the comfort of leather and the quicker break-in of Kydex, but they might not have the same level of retention as either full Kydex or full leather holsters. When it comes to IWB, it’s superior for concealment compared to OWB, but it’s generally less comfortable. OWB is harder to conceal but offers easier access to drawing. After retiring, I mostly carried IWB for off-duty situations. It’s easier to hide, but I had to wear pants one size larger for comfort. Then there’s the choice of a retention system. Thumb breaks or mechanical systems are worth considering, especially for OWB carry. They can prevent someone from grabbing the gun from your holster while not significantly slowing down your draw. Ultimately, how I carry and my location play a significant role in making these choices.

I’m interested in getting some insights on the top leather IWB holster options for my pistol. I’m hoping to find something that’s not too pricey but still offers good quality. Any suggestions for more affordable alternatives would be greatly appreciated.

I own a Safariland Model 17t Tuckable IWB Concealment Holster, and I must say it’s of exceptional quality. If you’re in the market for a comfortable leather holster, I would recommend it.
